2017-2018 APPLICATION INFORMATION FOR
TCS FIRST YEAR SEMINAR (PE 100) PEER EDUCATOR
AND/OR
TCS ALUMNI MENTOR
The Clarkson School is accepting applications from:
 current Clarkson School students to serve as Alumni Mentors for the 2017-2018 academic year and/or;
 current Clarkson School students or Clarkson School alumni to serve as Peer Educators for TCS First Year Seminar (PE 100)
for the 2017-2018 academic year.
These are great leadership opportunities in which you will assist us in welcoming new students to The Clarkson School, support them
in their transition to college life, and serve as a role model.
Included in this packet is a position description for both roles and an application. You may choose to apply for one position or for
both positions. Only one application is required if you choose to apply for both positions. Please take time to review all materials
to discern whether either role – or both! – would be a good fit for you.
The application requirements for Peer Educator and/or Alumni Mentor consist of:
1) A completed application (pages 5-6 of this packet)
2) Current résumé
3) Two recommendation forms from a Clarkson University advisor, professor, or supervisor (pages 7 and 8 of this packet)
4) Required attendance at a Peer Educator/Alumni Mentor Interest Meeting:
Wednesday, February 15 at 5:00pm in Snell 169
4) Interview, if required, with PE100 Instructor, Brenda Kozsan, and/or Kathleen O’Leary, TCS Mentor supervisor
All application materials must be submitted by 4:00pm on Monday, February 27, 2017. Applicants are responsible for printing out

their own application materials and submitting them in person at The Clarkson School/Honors Program office (2 floor, Price Hall).
Recommendation forms should be sent to the TCS Office directly from the recommender. Applications that are missing any
component are considered incomplete.

TCS ALUMNI MENTOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
In the living/learning atmosphere of The Clarkson School, everyone works together to make the total daily experience a positive one
for all. Residents are therefore expected to conduct themselves in a personally responsible, mature, and orderly manner at all
times, with due regard for the rights of others. Clarkson School Alumni Mentors are part of a larger living and learning community
encompassing the current Clarkson School students and students in Honors Housing. It is expected that all Clarkson School Alumni
Mentors will support the initiatives and goals of the greater learning community and cooperate fully with The Clarkson School &
Honors Program House Advisors. Upperclass Clarkson School Alumni Mentors are not expected to abide by the curfew and visitation
requirements placed upon the incoming Clarkson School students. However, it is expected that Alumni Mentors do not create
distractions or disruptions within the community regarding curfew and visitation and are expected to abide by all Clarkson University
policies as outlined in the Clarkson University Regulations.
The TCS Alumni Mentor position is unpaid. Clarkson School alumni who are selected to serve as Alumni Mentors will be assigned to
a room in Clarkson School housing with the understanding that this housing assignment obligates them for the entire academic year
(exclusive of vacation periods) with the exception of withdrawal or disciplinary separation from Clarkson University. Students may
also be removed from the Alumni Mentor role (and removed from TCS housing) should they fail to live up to the expectations
outlined below.
Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 to be considered for the Alumni Mentor positions. Alumni Mentors are also
expected to maintain ag least a 2.75 GPA after the Fall Semester.
For the 2017-2018 academic year, we anticipate that Clarkson School housing will be located on the second and third floors of
Ormsby and the second and third floors of Newell. Initially, we plan on having approximately 8 spaces available for Alumni Mentors.
All decisions will be made prior to spring break and all students will be contacted with an update on their status. Students who are
selected and accept the position as Clarkson School Alumni Mentors will not receive a lottery number and will not need to
participate in the Housing Lottery after spring break.
TCS Alumni Mentor Responsibilities
 Attend training and team meetings
o Alumni Mentors will return to campus early in August (date TBD), prior to Clarkson School student move-in, for
training. Clarkson School Alumni Mentors will be required to attend monthly check-in meetings with the Associate
Director of Student & Alumni Relations and/or the HA team.
 Assist with Clarkson School move-in and Orientation
o In coordination with Associate Director of Student & Alumni Relations, Alumni Mentors will return to campus early in
August (date TBD), prior to Clarkson School student move-in, to serve as the move-in crew for our new Clarkson School
students. This will involve manual labor – assisting students as they move belongings into our residence halls. Mentors
will also be responsible for planning multiple community-wide and floor events during Orientation and for ensuring TCS
students attend Orientation events.
 Serve as a role model for Clarkson School students
o Clarkson School Alumni Mentors must abide by the Clarkson University Code of Student Conduct
(http://www.clarkson.edu/studentaffairs/regulations/v.html). However, The Clarkson School expectation of Alumni
Mentor student conduct goes above and beyond what is written in the Code due to the special mentoring
relationship that exists. Clarkson School Alumni Mentors are expected to hold themselves to the highest standards
of personal conduct and are expected to treat all members of the community – students and staff alike – with
respect, while always being conscious of setting a positive example for Clarkson School students. Clarkson School
Alumni Mentors are expected to abide by the expectations set forth by the House Advisor staff and assist House
Advisors in maintaining a safe and healthy living environment.
 Be attentive to the individual needs and adjustment issues of Clarkson School residents on their floor
o Clarkson School Alumni Mentors may be called upon to assist current Clarkson School students in their transition to
college, including possible tutoring, navigating the University, and encouraging involvement outside of The Clarkson
School. Mentors should be aware of University support services and resources in order to refer Clarkson School
students when necessary and Mentors should report any concerns that they have about Clarkson School students’
physical, mental, or emotional safety to a House Advisor or to Clarkson School staff.

Clarkson School Family Dinners
o Attendance at monthly Clarkson School Family Dinners is required. Alumni Mentors may be asked to assist in
facilitating these dinners.
Programming
o In addition to Orientation programming, Clarkson School Alumni Mentors are required to plan one floor program
within the first six weeks of classes in the fall and spring semesters.

POSITION DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
Job Description of Peer Educators:
 Serve as a role model for first year Clarkson School students in PE100
 Assist Clarkson School students with the understanding of teamwork skills
 Disseminate appropriate paperwork and other information to the students
 Facilitate and engage a group of 6-8 Clarkson School students in class activities
 Assist guest speakers and Coordinator with the facilitation of the class
 Provide feedback to guest speakers and Coordinator to enhance PE100
 Adhere to the class guidelines as outlined in the FYS class
 Understand and be prepared for PE100 activities each week
 Participate in the evaluation process of Clarkson School students
 Attend mandatory weekly meetings with the Coordinator
 Attend training sessions as scheduled
 Attend orientation meeting prior to the first class in the semester
 Work with other peer educators on various projects
 Other duties related to peer education
