Bowls Dunedin Inc. 109th Annual Report 2015 - 2016 Presented at the Annual General Meeting Held at the Dunedin Lawn Bowls Stadium 38 Tahuna Road, Dunedin 9013 21st July 2016 Mike Kernaghan Black Jack in action at the Asia Pacific Championships 2015 1. BOARD REPORTS President’s Report On behalf of the Board it is with pleasure that I present the 109th Annual Report of the Centre’s activities for the 2015-2016 year. I extend sincere congratulations to all our representative teams on the great success that was achieved in this past season. All the representative teams’ successes can be of real satisfaction to the Mangers/Coaches, Men – Jim Scott Manager/Selector, Steve Wilson Coach/Selector, Women – Anne Craik Manager/Selector, Noreen Paul Coach/Selector and then Carolyn Crawford Selector and Lyn Rance Manager and Men & Women Development teams & Under 8s Manager/Coach Evan Roberts. An extremely competent task well carried out and the Boards sincere appreciation is extended to you all. All the representative teams and all club results are outlined in detail later in this report, but special mention must be made of the Male Bowler of the Year, Bobby Johnson (Wakari) and Peter Wilson (Forbury Park) joint winners and Female Bowler of the Year, Sarah Scott (North East Valley). All recipients made very positive and thought provoking comments in their address to a large contingent of members at the Centre Annual Awards held at the Taieri Club on Friday 20th May 2016. In the financial statements we have recorded a loss of $6,310.00 but the main factor in this was that the Board made the decision to replace all representative playing gear at a cost of $6,074.00, an item that has been put aside for a number of years and urgently required update and replacement. The charity grants received of $55,835.00 was an excellent achievement by our Secretary, Darryl Young. Overall the Board considers that our financial position is very sound. Grateful thanks to Carolyn Crawford and her team on the Operations Committee and to Alan Varcoe and Kevin Cosgrove for collating all results and making them available to the media and our own website. To all clubs who willingly hosted Centre Events and/or Champion of Champion Events our thanks, also thank you to the respective green keepers, and most importantly to the umpires, who always take part in all these events throughout the season. In conclusion my sincere thanks to fellow Board members for your ongoing efforts and willingly giving of your valuable time. Gerard Simmons President Chairman’s Report The 2015—2016 season proved to be another positive season for the Dunedin Centre. The Awards Night held at the Taieri Bowling Club gave bowlers the opportunity to congratulate our “high achievers”. These achievers simply showed how they were able to compete at a high level right across a wide variety of events in our well –balanced programme. Another very pleasing aspect is shown by Anne Craik and her willing coaching team who are giving guidance to up to 30 new bowlers and existing bowlers who want extra help, using the Stadium as their base. As I have stated many times before, this is where clubs benefit by having well trained new members. Our men’s and women’s representative teams performed with distinction at the Inter-Centre competition, with the women, according to Lyn Rance’s report gained much experience, while the men lost by one vital shot from getting into the final. A big thankyou to our Rep selectors and managers who I know from personal experience completed a demanding task. May I thank the Operations Committee for presenting what I call a “well balanced” programme. There is a great deal of work involved in this area. I would also like to thank all the greenkeepers and umpires, who, without their dedicated efforts, we would have no events at all. This was a record year in securing grants for our Centre. The Board would like to thank all our “sponsors” who have been listed in the booklet, and would encourage all bowlers to support these sponsors, because this should not be a “one – way “deal. I thank our secretary for gaining extra grants and sponsors. Finally, I wish you all well and sincere sportsmanship for the coming season, and please give as much voluntary work that you can to your clubs. We are at the cross roads in many areas Kind Regards Geoff Hanna Chairman Bowls Dunedin Operations Committee Report Bowls Dunedin Centre is made up of members who play bowls at all different levels Social (club & interclub only), Competitor (centre & higher events) and players that will enter all events. Operations committee have the task of considering all bowlers at all the different levels and this is not an easy task as bowlers have their own agendas. Feedback received is not always what we all want, but it depends on what type of player you’re considered to be. Every time you have something negative to say, think about how can the negative thought be changed to a positive, to fix into our bowling programme at different levels. The committee is open for any suggestions. Thanks must go to Geoff Simons and Allan Varcoe for looking after the draws and collating the results. Both jobs well done. Association Hand Book – job well done, but I do apologise for some of the interclub draw changes made at short notice. It is very important for each club to have a person to check the internet on a regular/ weekly basis. The internet is the only source that can be used to kept information up to date within 24 hours of playing the competition. Centre Events – Thank you to all bowlers who played in these events, we need competitor to make these events successful and improve our bowlers. It is always good for our centre to be represented at National Events. To club volunteers, the umpires, and club’s offering and allowing their greens to be used a big thank you. To the operations committee Robert, Duane, Geoff and myself a big job well done. Carolyn Crawford Convenor Operations Committee 2.
