Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education Content: -Book: Lord of the Flies by William Golding (summer reading) Summative Assessment Tasks • Character Analysis Essay – write 5 paragraphs about Ralph, Jack, Piggy or Simon and what motivates their actions in the novel (Criteria A, B, C) Unit 2: I Will Survive Unit Dates: September – Mid-October Unit Question: What does it take to be a survivor? Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education Content: -Epic Poem: The Odyssey by Homer Summative Assessment Tasks • Persuasive Essay – Write an essay in which each student takes a stance on whether Odysseus is a hero or a scoundrel (Criteria A, B) Unit 4: Today or Tomorrow? Unit Dates: November - December Unit Question: What’s worth more: the destination or the journey? Is it better to live for today or plan for tomorrow? Area of Interaction : Approaches to Learning Content: -Students will be writing a research paper on any topic of their choosing. They will be continuing the idea of “The Hero’s Journey” from the book The Odyssey. Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education Content: -Play: Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Summative Assessment Tasks • Renaissance Newspaper Project (A, B, C) • Timed Essay – Argument and Evidence – Choices: A. Is love stronger than hate? B. Who is most at fault for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. C. What could Romeo and Juliet have done differently so that they may have lived. Explain your reasoning. (Criteria A, B, C) Unit 6: My Bother’s Keeper Unit Dates: March – Mid-April Unit Question: What do we owe others? Area of Interaction: Community and Service Content -Book: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck -Short stories: “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan -Poems: “Meditation 17” John Donne, “Incident in a Rose Garden”, “Where the Sidewalk Ends” Shel Silverstein Summative Assessment Tasks • Poetry Analysis and Creative Writing (Poetry) – Find and write 3 poems and each Poem should center around one of the following theme: “What do we owe others?” Define what you owe each type of relationship in your life. (Criteria A, B, C) o Family: parents, children, or siblings o Friends: best friends, boyfriends, or girlfriends o Community: neighborhood, state, country, world…etc. Unit 7: Breaking the Law Unit Dates: Mid-April – May Unit Question: When is it okay for a person to take the law into their own hands? Area of Interaction: Community and Service Content: -Book: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie Summative Assessment Tasks • Literary Response Critical Reading Questions – Literary Response to the Unit Question. Answer unit question using book, historical or current events, personal life (Criteria A, B) Vocabulary, Grammar and Literary Terms will be text-based and covered at various points throughout each unit. Writing Process 1. Rough draft written in class 2. Peer editing 3. 2nd draft conference with teacher 4. Final draft turned in for MYP Criteria grading 5. Submit correction of errors after final grade Office hours in room 401: Students are encouraged to use office hours to receive extra learning support. These office hours may be changed due to scheduled faculty meetings, conferences, or unforeseen circumstances 3:00-3:30 pm- every day
