PLANET EARTH – THE BLUE PLANET Earth is the only planet in our solar system where humans can live. It has got oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, many different forms of life, and oxygen to breathe. The Earth is called the Blue Planet because it has got a lot of water. If we look at the Earth from space, the oceans and the atmosphere make the planet look blue. About seventy-one per cent of the Earth is covered with water. About twenty-nine per cent of the Earth is formed by land called continents. WORLD OCEANS - THE BIG 5 Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and contain about 97% of the planet's water. Many underwater animals, fish and plants live there, from green plankton to the great and enormous the blue whale. Discover more about the fascinating world of the ocean! There is only one big ocean in the world, because all the oceans and seas are connected. Now, there are five main areas in this one big ocean. • The Pacific Ocean is the biggest of the five main oceans. • The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean. • The Indian Ocean • The Southern Ocean • The Artic Ocean covers the North Pole. It's frozen all the time. It's the smallest ocean. OCEANS - THE BLUE FACTOR Why are the oceans so blue? The light of the Sun has got all the colours of the rainbow. When the light hits water, part of the light is absorbed. Blue light is absorbed by water very easily. OCEANS - THE SALT FACTOR Why has the ocean got salt? When water goes in rivers, it gets mineral salts from the rocks. This salty water then goes into the seas and oceans. Ocean water evaporates in the process of the water cycle, but the salt doesn't evaporate and stays in the ocean. LEARNING ABOUT WATER IN SPAIN Very big areas of water are oceans. But small areas are seas. The water in oceans and seas is constantly in movement. Spain is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
