Making Christ Central Page 2 OUR MISSION IS TO GATHER AS GOD’S PEOPLE, TO GROW AS DISCIPLES, AND TO GO INTO THE WORLD AS MINISTERS OF JESUS CHRIST From the Pastorʼs Study On Thursday, April 28, the Session spent 5 hours together with Reverend Heahwan Rim, General ExecuVve of the Synod of the South AtlanVc. He came to train the Session in the proper procedures for use by presbyteries and churches in a period of discernment. There are a number of important points that should be menVoned: • The PCUSA has a Book of Order that governs the acVons of presbyteries and Sessions. In addiVon, the Permanent Judicial CommiQee of the General Assembly has made rulings on gray areas in the Book of Order that are binding for churches. • Dismissal of congregaVons to another Reformed body is the responsibility of the presbytery and ulVmately resides with them. Our pastors and elder commissioners, along with those of other churches, make up the presbytery and make decisions when they meet (about 4 Vmes a year). • Presbyteries have been encouraged to develop Gracious Dismissal Policies and many have. Some of these policies, however, have in them processes that have since been ruled invalid, such as votes by the congregaVon. Each presbytery must use a variety of means, other than a vote, to listen to and consult with a congregaVon during such a Vme. • Presbyteries typically form an AdministraVve Commission to work with a church in a Vme of discernment. This commission should work with the Session and congregaVon. It should not see its role as adversarial nor should it assume original jurisdicVon. The AdministraVve Commission will primarily work with the Session, as the “council” of the local congregaVon, but will listen to all the members of the congregaVon for their thoughts and input. • If discussions of dismissal take place, they must take all factors into account in terms of a financial seQlement. These must include the overall value of the property along with other relevant informaVon. • The goal of these processes is to have a peaceful resoluVon that avoids liVgaVon in the church court system, cares for all the people in the congregaVon, and promotes the work of Jesus Christ. • These periods of discernment, conversaVon, negoVaVon, and decision take Vme. A typical period of discernment last from 6 – 9 months. It is unclear how much of our previous Vme of discernment will count toward this process. • Dr. Rim urged both the Session and the AdministraVve Commission to work together as collegially as possible, as this will make for the best outcome for the enVre congregaVon. There is a more detailed version of this overview on the Deacons’ Table in the Gathering Area. You may call the church office if you would like to receive a copy in the mail. The most important thing the congregaVon can do is keep this process in your prayers. The goal and hope is the will of God. Let us join together in praying for God’s grace, guidance, help, and will. Sincerely, Bob Bob Bohler Session Notes At the April Session meeVng, the Session: *Hired Lindsey Bailey to work part-‐Vme this summer with the youth and with media for the contemporary worship service. *Heard reports from the different ministry commiQees of the Session. *Discussed the upcoming training session with Dr. Heahwan Rim and quesVons they wanted him to be sure and address. On Thursday, April 29, the Session met for 5 hours with Dr. Rim. It reported the meeVng in a “CongregaVonal ConversaVon” on Sunday morning, May 1, during Sunday School. A copy of this report is available on the Deacons’ Table or you may call the church office for a copy.
