TEACHER INFORMATION SHEET: DO NOT COPY THIS PAGE FOR STUDENTS
Please Note: These activities are teaching tools NOT independent practice sheets. Students should be guided
through the information on each sheet and provided opportunities for partner discussion. They will be
reviewing identified assessed skills as they learn about the language of the test and how test items will look.
They should be allowed to ask questions about the skill or specific items. If they don’t understand, NOW is the
time to provide additional instruction and support.
Word Analysis
The following lesson items illustrate the types of items that assess students’ knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, and
homographs.
Lesson 1: Word Analysis – Synonyms
 Be sure students are aware that “same or about the same” and “synonyms” mean the same thing. They need to
be familiar with both terms as they could be used interchangeably.
 Prepare students that they will need to listen carefully to the directions you give them.
o The teacher will complete a sample question with the students.
 Assess student’s prior knowledge and build on what they know.
 Model for students and make your thinking visible (using the student practice sheet for Lesson 1).
o Provide any direct instruction based off of the information you gathered when assessing their prior
knowledge.
 Have students work with you on identifying synonyms (using the student practice sheet for Lesson 1).
 Release the students to work with a partner or small group to continue working on identifying synonyms.
o Example: Provide students with bubble maps. Put into a sheet protector to reuse for each group. Write
a word in the center circle. Have students race against another group to see which group can come up
with as many synonyms as possible. Have groups share out in order to provide immediate feedback.
o Example: Make synonym matches on index cards (one card says mad, the match could be angry) and
create a memory game. Students would turn over one card and have to find the synonym match to
make a pair.
 Close the lesson by having students complete the last four questions on student practice sheet for Lesson 1.
Administer the final questions as if the students were taking the actual IREAD-3 assessment. Let students know
this is how they will complete questions like this when they take the actual test. Read the script below.
o Look at questions 9-12. You will choose the word that means the same, or about the same, as the
underlined word.

meaning.
 Prepare students that they will need to listen carefully to the directions you give them.
o The teacher will complete a sample question with the students.
 Assess student’s prior knowledge and build on what they know.

 Release the students to work with a partner or small group to continue working on identifying homographs.
o Example: Provide students with sentence cards and homograph word cards. Put the sentence cards in a
baggie along with the homograph word cards. Have students put the homograph word cards in a
column. Students can pull a sentence card and match it with the homograph word card. They should
end up with a sentence card, homograph word card, and another sentence card on the other side.
Complete the activity until all homograph word cards have a sentence card on each side.
o Example: Have students work in partners to complete Homograph Hoorah!
