3D Shape headbands
These headbands are a great way to teach 3D shapes. Make them as you teach each shape.
Children will see this shape all day.
Activities Using 1 Shape Headband:
Call children to get in line or go to different areas in the room by the color they colored their large shape.
“All yellow cubes go to the rug.”
Pair up children. Each child will name the shape their buddy has on. They will tell if it is a 2D or 3D shape. If
you teach sides and vertices with 3D shapes they can give this information too.
Activities Using All 4 Shape Headband:
Call children to get in line or go to different areas in the room by the shape they have on. “All cones get in
line.”
The teacher can start a pattern with the children and their shape headbands by having them come to the
front. She will then ask what shape should come next. Children that have on that shape band will raise their
hand. The teacher will call the child to come up. Continue until the pattern is complete.
Have the children sort themselves by shape. Count how many of each shape you have and tell which you have
more of, less of, or the same of.
Pair up children. Each child will name the shape their buddy has on. They will tell if it is a 2D or 3D shape. If
you teach sides and vertices with 3D shapes, they can give this information too. One child will tell how
their buddy’s shape is the same as theirs. The other child will tell how their buddy’s shape is different from
theirs.
A child will describe their shape to the class.
Two children with different shape headbands can stand before the class. The class will tell how the 2 shapes
are alike and different.
Copy them on card stock. The children will fill in the number 3 on the line to show that the shape is 3D. They
will color the shapes and cut them out. Add bands to the headband and staple or tape it around the child’s
head. You could use a sentence strip instead of the bands.

Add these bands to the sides of the headband by stapling or taping them. I glue a white sentence strip to mine and
stable the 2 ends around the child’s head.
