Parish Mass Time 9.30 a.m. Sunday
Term 1, Week 4
Dear Parents, caregivers and friends,
Opening School Mass
Our opening school mass for the 2017 year was celebrated this morning. This was a beautiful
service to mark our theme “Give thanks with a grateful heart.” I was delighted to see the
class prayer cloths which were hung to establish our sacred space, representing our
community’s commitment to living out our theme of gratitude for our many gifts and
blessings. I am grateful for the efforts of all who attended and contributed to this ceremony.
New Director
Following the retirement of Mr Ray Collins, we welcome a new Director of Schools to the
Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. Dr Michael Slattery was commissioned at this week’s
Called to Serve Mass, commencing his new role of leadership. I look forward to working
under his direction.
Congratulations Bettina O’Heir
On Tuesday evening many teachers and staff in our
Catholic Schools attended the annual Called to Serve
Mass, celebrated at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton.
At this Mass teachers who have worked in Catholic
Education for 25 years are recognised.
We congratulate Mrs Bettina O’Heir on receiving her
award and thank her for her dedication and enthusiasm
to education.
Welcome Shelley Ireland
Mrs Ireland commenced work at St Patrick’s this week in
the role of Learning Support Assistant. She worked
previously at St Joseph’s Walgett in a similar position and
offers many skills. Mrs Ireland will work to support students
in Year 5.
Swimming Carnival
I offer my Congratulations to the St Patrick’s swim team for their great
individual and team performances at the cluster carnival held on
Wednesday. Our relay teams performed particularly well, and many
children experienced personal best performances throughout the
day. St Pat’s is going to be well represented at the Regional Carnival
on the 28th February at Lambton Pool. Special thanks to Mrs Murray
for her coordination and endless energy in pursuit of quality sport for
our students.
School Improvement Plan- Goals for 2017
I have been working closely with all staff to develop goals and strategies for the 2017 school
year which align with CSO strategic objectives for the next 3 years, under 4 broad priority
areas or domains.
In the specific domain of LEARNING, teachers will have ongoing professional development
to ensure they are fully equipped to deliver high quality learning experiences which meet
the educational needs of all students at St Patrick’s.
Our focus areas include;
- Raising the achievement of students in Literacy and Numeracy
- Exploring relevant, and engaging learning opportunities for Gifted Students
- The implementation of play based pedagogies, which reflect Early Learning
research, embedded into History/Geography, Science and Religious Education for
Kindergarten
Over the term I will share additional information.

Bus Expectations
Mr Nolan spoke to all children this week at morning assembly outlining behavioural
expectations when travelling to and from school on the bus. We expect children to
behave appropriately at all times, to ensure positive relationships and student safety.
Children who do not do the right thing on the bus will face consequences at school as
per our PBS matrix, and may in some instances, at the discretion of the bus company, lose
their bus privileges.
Please reinforce expectations with your child.

Winter and Summer Sport Trials
Each year children from the All Saints Cluster of schools are invited to compete against
one another in sports that they excel. The aim is to progress to compete against other
regional schools from which a representative team from the Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle is formed to play at Polding. Selected individuals are then chosen to compete
against other students in the state.
In the past, trials have been open to children of varied ages. As our school enrolment has
increased and the popularity of most representative sports has grown, only children in
Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) will be eligible to trial for representative duty. Trials are conducted at
school for children who play their preferred sport competitively on weekends or outside of
school hours, following specific guidelines set out from the Catholic Schools Office.
In each sport, there are restrictions on the number of students permitted to represent their
respective schools. Soccer, for example allows us to send 6 competitors, while netball
allows us to send 4 competitors.
The children are notified via assembly message when each school trial is scheduled.
Regional trials for the following winter sports will be held at host schools on the following
dates:
Rugby League -23rd February
Netball
- 24th February
Soccer
- 1st March
Touch Footy - 13th March
AFL
- 16th March
Children who are selected to represent at these trials will be provided the necessary
paperwork. It is the parent’s responsibility to arrange transport.
Regards,
Jacqui Wilkinson
Principal
