Games and Activities Connecting PE with Common Core
John Smith, 1989 NASPE National Teacher of the Year
Educational Consultant, FlagHouse INC
This activity session will help you connect physical education games and activities to the common core
standards. The session will include tips on individualizing equipment, writing in physical education classes,
using math and science in K-6 physical education and creating lessons and units that include assessment for
students
CHINESE ROPES
Item # 18696
STRETCHING THE BODY AND THE MIND
Elastic stretch ropes, sometimes called Chinese jump ropes, are great for teaching shapes, sizes, designs and spatial
awareness. Each student is asked to mirror the shape the teacher is displaying. The student must visualize the shape,
design and spatial location of the shape and then create the same design using the stretch rope. The teacher uses a
large colorful piece of construction paper and constantly changes the shape, size spatial location and design of the
paper. Squares, triangles, rectangles can be created horizontally or vertically as well as in different sizes. The
concepts of big/small, horizontal/vertical, inverted, tall, flat, and planes can be taught in the physical education
curriculum.

A creative movement and fitness activity!
In groups of 3 people, with 2 of the 3 holding hands or wrists, person #3 is the runner. On the signal, the runner:
1. Over the partner’s joined hands, runs around the partners, goes under the joined hands, runs around and then
steps through the joined hands. The runner must start and end in the same spot. This continues until runners 2
and 1 have finished.
2. Change the order of runners
3. Double the number for each runner
4. Scramble the order (Around, under, over, through)
5. Hold up task cards
6. Rotate the task cards
7. Enter and exit on either side
8. Create the fastest pattern using all the movements
9. Challenge another group
10. Challenge the whole class

Timer Top Activities
# 14191
Timer tops add a challenging motivational dimension to activities. With a spin of the top, students are challenged to
do things quicker, better and on time. Timer tops can be used to work on skills, fitness, games and movements. When
making up Timer Top Challenges, use words and phrases like:
 Before the top stops
 While the top is spinning
 Until the top stops
 By time the top stops
 During the spin of the top
When working with partners or groups using Timer Tops, one person can be the spinner and also the assessment
person.

1. Dribble the ball with your best hand
2. Dribble the ball with your other hand
3. Dribble the ball switching hands
4. Dribble the ball changing levels of the dribble

SpinningTops
Balloon Skill Activities
Spin the top and see if you can do the following balloon skills until the top stops.
Then try each activity for one spin of the top each.
Spin the top and:
1. Keep the balloon up in the air with your hands
2. Tap the balloon between your hands
3. Tap the balloon up with your 10 fingers
4. Keep the balloon up using your elbows
5. Keep the balloon up using your head
6. Kick the balloon up in the air
7. Toss the balloon up and jump up and catch it
8. Keep the balloon up with your hands while moving forward and backward
9. Keep the balloon up using different body parts on each hit
10. Hit the balloon up and do pushups until it comes down
Read, Write and Run
This activity combines reading, writing and running (walking) together in a partnership activity. Person# 1 sits and
reads the instructions for the activity, and begins to write the necessary parts of the story. Partner #2 walks or runs
the movement course. After 1-3 minutes, the partners change places and partner #2 reads the instructions, reads what
partner #1 has written and continues writing the story or answers. Partner # 1 is now walking or running.

Front/Back/Right/Left:
I will say front, you repeat it and take a step in that direction.
While walking in place!
Start by walking in place and saying:
 Front: everyone says Front and steps forward
 Back: everyone says Back and steps back
 Right: everyone says Right and steps right
 Left: everyone says Left and steps left
Now I will say it, you say it and do the opposite action:
 Leader says Front, students say Front, students step Back
 Leader says Back, students say Back, students step Front
Now I will say it, you say the opposite and do the opposite
Now I will say it, you say the opposite but do what I said.
This can also be done with hands going front, back, left, right, up and down.

Noodle Bit Body Balance
#15869
Teams of 2 or 3 players try to balance noodle nuggets on a
teammate. Using a circle formation, one partner runs out to
the nugget pile and selects 1 nugget to bring back to balance on
his teammate (waist and higher). Then returns to the pile to
select another to bring back and continues this until the
nuggets fall off the teammate. Then they switch jobs and start
over.
Noodle Slices
Item # 17748
See Flaghouse.com/activityguides for more activities
These Noodle Slices are made of 1 inch cut pieces of water noodles.
Noodle Slices Activities: Place a large amount of Noodle Slices in the center of the activity area. Partners take
turns going into the area to pick up 1 or 2 slices and return to their group to continue the activity.
1. Balance slices on a partner. Groups of 3 with 2 partners going into the middle to retrieve the
slices bring them back and balance them on partner #3. This continues until the balanced slices
fall. Then change the balance partner.
2. Slices Sandwich: 2 partners place 1 slice between their hands. The third partner retrieves 2 more
slices and places them between the hands. This continues until the slices fall. Then another
partner becomes the retriever.
3. Noodle Slices Muscle Building: Partners 1 and 2 going into the activity area and retrieve 1 slice
each. They return and build biceps on partner #3. This continues until the bicep falls. A new
partner then becomes the muscle.
4. Weight Lifting Slices: Just like Noodle Slices Muscle Building except the Slices Weight Lifter
must hold their hands up like they are doing a bench press or a lift and jerk.

Noodle Hockey
Noodle Hockey
Noodle Hockey is a very active safe game that is played using water noodles and 7” coated foam balls. Goals
(cones) are set up at each end of the game area. Each team has a different color noodle and goalies have a
third color. Goals are scored when the ball is hit with the noodle between the cones below the height of the
goalies waist. Games can be timed or rotated when a certain number of goals are scored.
Simple Rules:
 Noodles must be held with one hand on each end of the noodle
 Goals are approximately 15 feet wide
 Penalties for holding, hitting and unsportsmanlike play are 1-2 minutes out of game
 No kicking of the ball is allowed
 Use multiple balls for faster games is permitted and recommended
