Example 3: Calculating the area of a trapezoid using a formula
Calculate the area of the
wading pool.
Solution
A 5 (a 1 b) 3 h 4 2
5 (3 m 1 5 m) 3 3 m 4 2
58m33m42
5 24 m2 4 2
5 12 m2
This is the formula for the area of a trapezoid, where a and
b represent the lengths of the parallel sides. You can choose
these values: a = 3 m, b = 5 m, and h = 3 m. (You could have
chosen a = 5 m and b = 3 m instead.)
Substitute these values into the formula.
The area of the wading pool is 12 m2.
