INDIANA ASSOCIATION OF UNITED WAY’S INVEST 1213 GRANT SUPPORTED: • Child Care Network for the Jump Start to School Success and Family Preschool programs thus preparing 95 students in the county for school success. • Our new work with the Jackson County Education Coalition supported Summer Challenge at Seymour Middle School in partnership with Cummins Seymour Engine Plant. This program provided the opportunity for over 90 students to have brain gain, instead of brain drain over the summer months. Over a four week period, on a whole students showed a 36% increase in Language Arts and 27% increase in Math due to small teacher to student ratios. • Work for Turning Point, focused on health outcomes in order to keep teens safe from dating violence. In 2014, Turning Point received approval to provide the Dating Violence Prevention Safe Dates curriculum through classrooms in Brownstown Central and Seymour Middle Schools. 2014 2014: A YEAR OF ENGAGEMENT BOARD MEMBERS - Thank you, Outgoing Board Members! Pharmaceuticals THANK YOU TO OUR CAMPAIGN SPONSORS! EXECUTIVE MESSAGE A.V.I. FoodSystems Inc. Artistic Impressions Cupid’s Arrow Indiana Oxygen Downey Design Over the last 50 years, JCUW’s solo focus has been to raise funds in the annual campaign. That’s why JCUW was created to support our community partners. While this is a very important piece of our work, we know it is not the only reason for our existence. Recently, Brian Gallagher, United Way Worldwide President shared, “Fundraising is not United Way’s reason to exist, but that it is the platform on which we pursue community change and impact.” JCUW’s role is not only to be a fundraiser, but to also understand and communicate community conditions, convene and collaborate on issues affecting the community, and create lasting impact. JCUW had a great 2014. The JCUW Board & Staff focused on engagement and there was great success to tout. JCUW continues to assess needs, secure resources and strategically invest resource to create lasting change in the areas of education, health, and financial stability. In 2014, JCUW focused on increasing volunteerism and had celebrated great success including a record breaking 18th Annual Day of Caring and 40% increase in matching volunteers through or Volunteer Center. One great story is from Paul and Carolyn from Aisin World Corp. They contacted UW to see how they could volunteer and do something meaningful. Through the matching process UW staff learned that Paul wanted to serve children. Matching Paul and Carolyn with Boys & Girls Club provided an opportunity for them to teach three basic Japanese classes and a day of Origami for the kids. A note of thanks included this, “Paul is really enjoying this activity! Thank you so much for putting us in touch with Mr. Stanfield. This seems to have been a perfect pairing for Paul.” The UW Board focused on becoming more active and engaged too. Board members committed to serving on one committee and provided added support of the staff’s work. JCUW hosted its first Board to Board social as an opportunity for leadership to network and learn about opportunities for collaboration. The board also got more involved in the annual campaign by vising with CEOs in the late spring. We believe that by investing in relationships with top level support, JCUW positioned itself for a strong campaign within those companies. JCUW was excited to announce that it exceeded its goal for the first time since 2007. Our organization is moving forward to not only be a funder but to start focusing on creating lasting impact. In 2015, JCUW will be focusing on building stronger partnerships. Collaboration will be our focus as we continue to consider how we move the needle on important community conditions including ensuring all students are ready to learn when starting Kindergarten and tackling the drug issue. We look forward to embracing new ideas and initiatives which will bring people, organizations, and communities together with a common purpose-to improve the quality of life in Jackson County.
