GPS HERITAGE QUEST
You are about to embark on a unique high-tech scavenger hunt that will take you to interesting, scenic and historical
locations around Prince Edward Island National Park and area. Where you’re going and where you will end up is a
mystery to be solved using the GPS coordinates we have provided. In addition, you need to find answers to clues that will
solve the crossword puzzle you have been given.
Although you’ve been shown how to use the GPS unit, we’re including some step-by-step reminder instructions:


Bottom button on the right is the on/off switch.
The top button on the right is the Page button. By pushing it several times it will bring you to the Main Menu
screen
 On the left side of the unit are 3 buttons. The top two buttons are used to scroll up or down. The bottom button
is the select button.
 When you reach the Main Menu screen, push the down button to highlight Waypoints then push the enter/select
button.
 On the Waypoints page, highlight the letters “0-9”. This will bring up a list of waypoints starting with 001. Push
the select button to highlight 001. Then use the up/down buttons to scroll to the Waypoint you want.
 When you have highlighted the Waypoint you want, push the select button.
 This will bring up the Review Waypoint page. Check to make sure the number shown in the flag is the one you
want. If it is, proceed to the next step. If it is not, push the Page button (top right) to return to list of waypoints to
select the correct waypoint.
 On the Review Waypoints page the words “Go To” should be highlighted. If it isn’t, highlight it. Push the Select
button.
 This will bring up the compass you will use to lead you to your destination. (Note that at the top you will see the
distance you are from your destination. This will help you in making decisions on the direction you need to go.)
 When you have reached your destination and are ready to head off to your next waypoint….Press the “page”
button on the top right hand side until you get back to the Main Menu screen to select “Waypoints”…..and then
follow the same procedure to enter your next waypoint number.
Some hints to keep in mind:



The compass always points in the direction of your destination “as the crow flies”….In order to get where
you want to go you will have to find the roads that will get you there
If the compass arrow is between the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock position you can usually continue driving in the
direction you are going. If the arrow points to 9 or 3, it means you will need to make a turn. If the arrow
points away from the direction you are traveling, it means you have passed the waypoint and need to find a
way to head in that direction either by turning around or finding a road that will take you in that direction.
This is where the distance meter in the top right hand corner will help you decide what to do.
If you are standing still, the compass may not point in the correct direction….If this happens, just start
driving or walking around
Adventure awaits…….Enjoy your day.

Approximate time:
Cavendish Route - 2 hours

Before heading out on the Heritage Quest, take a stroll out onto the deck overlooking the 13 hole of Green Gables Golf
Course. The view out to the dunes and the Gulf of St. Lawrence is spectacular.
Rainbow Memories- Your first stop has some wonderful Cavendish history linked to it. This was once the site
001
of a marvellous family fun park and has now become an equally special place for families to enjoy the natural
surroundings. The thick tree cover might interrupt the GPS signal but continue straight on to find the answer to 14
Down.
002
Head of the TrailGo out of the parking lot to the road and don't be fooled by the direction the compass
points. Remember, it always points directly to your next destination so you'll need to find the road that leads you there.
Once there you'll see the answer to 10 Down.
003
Walking on WaterPrepare for a unique experience as you follow the floating boardwalk out along the
Dunelands Trail leading to 11 Down.
We RememberContinue along the trail, past the dunes and marram grass. Before you reach the look004
off over magnificent Cavendish Beach take a moment at the monument to think about those who never got the chance to
stand here. 4 Across.
Take a few moments to read the panels on the look-off and take some pictures so you can savour the view for years to
come before heading back along the trail to your vehicle to resume the next leg of your Quest.
005
Fore! You're going to head back the way you came to reach your next destination. Green Gables Golf
Course was one of the Island's first courses built in 1939 by legendary Canadian designer Stanley Thompson and redesigned in 2009 by the equally famous Thomas McBroom. When you arrive, go upstairs in the Clubhouse where you'll
see the answer to 15 Across.
006
Anne's HouseYour next stop is at a National Historic Site and it's also the location of the answer to 9
Down. After you've found the solution, you can visit the site or come back another time.
007
Final Resting PlaceThe Island's most famous author lived away for many years but chose to make
her final resting place her beloved Cavendish. Her grave is an important historic site and a shrine for millions of her

008
The Other BooksWhere the path from the Haunted Woods crosses the road you'll find 7 Down and some
interesting history of Lucy Maud's time in Cavendish. Pull into the parking lot.
009
Cavendish HomeIf you want to follow the path, it's only a short walk to where Lucy Maud spent much of
her youth and where she wrote Anne of Green Gables. (Please note: there is a fee charged for access to the grounds,
payable at the bookstore at the end of the trail $4/adult; $2/child) It's an interesting stroll with lots of information about
her grandparents and her life. Keep on going past the old foundation and if you're lucky relatives Jenny or John Macneill
will be in the bookstore with the answer to 16 Across (If you don't want to walk, it's a short drive by car).
010
Marco PoloStanding here looking out over the Gulf of St. Lawrence try to imagine what it must have
been like on July 25, 1883 when the world's fastest ship ran aground just off this shoreline in front of you.
This is the end of the Cavendish Route. If you want to continue, please do. If this is as far as you want to go, you
can return the GPS unit to the Cavendish VIC.
The RusticosThis is one of the Island's largest fishing wharfs and during the spring lobster season
011
you'll see dozens of boats coming in and out of the harbour. It's also a great place to find a deep sea fishing charter as
well as the answer to 12 Down.
012
Fishing HistoryRustico Harbour has a rich fishing history and your next stop will provide you with the
opportunity to step back in time and find the answer to 1 Down.
013
Mi'kmaq VistaAt the head of the harbour, leave your vehicle in the parking lot and then walk out along
the rock breakwater to the wooden wharf. As you look along the sandy beach on your right, you'll see the trees of
Robinson Island in the distance. The Island has been the site of several archaeological digs revealing it as an important
Mi'kmaq settlement used as a summer encampment for the original inhabitants of the region.
014
Bank On ItWhen you leave the harbour area, turn left on Route 6 and let the compass guide you to
our next historical destination. This location houses two National Historic Sites that reflect the story of the Acadians who
lived here in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is one of the oldest settlements on the Island and the Doucette House might
well be the Island's oldest existing residence. You'll also solve 8 Across. There is an entrance fee but if you visit the
House, ask any of the staff to tell you what a "White Mass" is.
015
Hidden HistoryPrince Edward Island is dotted with dozens of pioneer cemeteries whose gravestones
reveal the rich history of settlement of the Island. Many generations of the same families are resting here and the
engravings can tell interesting stories.
016
Heritage HotelYou're now going to visit Canada's oldest continuously family-operated hotel and as such
recognized as a National Historic Site. In 1860, John Shaw started offering rooms in his farmhouse to Island visitors and
today his great-grandson Robbie continues the tradition. Read the heritage plaque in the garden in front of the hotel.

017
Yankee GaleLiving on an Island, we are always aware of the devastating power of the wind and the
sea. That was never more evident than on October 3 & 4, 1851 when the worst storm in history swept up the eastern
seaboard leaving death and destruction in its wake. At this location you will find a cache containing a plea from a
desperate family searching for answers on the disappearance of their son during the Yankee Gale. It contains the answer
to 5 Down. Park in the parking lot at Covehead Harbour across from the lighthouse. Grab an ice cream or soft drink
before you go.
018
Pioneer CemeteryEnjoy a short hike along the Farmland Trail. It will lead you to an enchanting spot tucked
in the woods where Scottish settlers and victims of the Yankee Gale have been buried. 6 Across.
019
Close Up ViewUse the telescope here to get a close up look down the shore to the sand dunes at
Blooming Point. This is a sacred location for the Island Mi'kmaqs.
Watch your "step" as you search for the cache hidden here containing the solution to 2 Down.
020
Summer HomeIt's hard to imagine your final location was once the summer home of a wealthy
American industrialist. Today this National Historic Site is a beautiful Inn with a renowned dining room. After finding the
answer to 3 Across you're welcome to go inside and walk about the main floor. It's a perfect spot to end your adventure
through Parks Canada history.
You can drop your GPS unit off at the front desk of Dalvay-by-the-Sea. Depending on what time you get there, stop by
the dining room for tea or other refreshments.
