The Board of Directors
of Reena and Reena
Foundation, our staff
and clients wish all
members of the Reena
family a healthy and
happy New Year.
W
hat a special night! The culmination
of months of meetings and discussions was
nothing short of spectacular. The
‘Answering the Challenge’ Gala will be
remembered as one of the largest dinners
ever held for Reena, and one that attracted
many new donors while rekindling the
commitment of many former Board
members, supporters and loyal friends.
The theme ‘Answering the Challenge’
was carefully chosen to mesh the focus of
Reena’s vision for the future with the
characteristics of the honouree, John
Bitove. John, together with his lovely
wife, Randi, truly answered our challenge.
Having toured a number of Reena’s group
homes, they were impressed by the quality
and importance of the services provided by
Reena. They accepted the challenge of
helping to raise funds for a second home
for Reena’s seniors. They faced this
challenge as they have faced those in their
own private and business lives — with
grace, sensitivity and commitment.
John was able to share his enthusiasm
for Reena with many business colleagues

and suppliers. Reena can now count Magna
International, Tribute Communities, The
Raptor Foundation, Labatt, Molson, Pepsi
and the National Post (to name a few) as the
newest friends of the Reena family.
The 2002 Gala was chaired by Bert
and Marilyn Raphael, a couple whose
own experiences have made them most
valuable members of the Reena family.
Their challenge was to co-ordinate the
fundraising efforts of the evening, as well
as the logistics. Bert recruited a tribute
committee whose job it was to raise
awareness for Reena in the greater community and to ensure sponsorship for and
attendance at the dinner. They were
successful on both counts — over 1,000
people attended the Gala!
Marilyn recruited a remarkable and
energetic group of volunteers who coordinated the arrangements for the
evening. Under the careful and nurturing
eye of Honey Martin, Chair of Arrangements, these ladies scoured the city for the
latest in decor and for the most generous of

Messages from Board Chairs and Executive Director
Reena
by Howard Ungerman
By the time you read this message, I will have
passed the gavel to Fay Rotman, the new
Chair of Reena. I do so with many emotions:
satisfaction, regret,
gratitude and pride.
Satisfaction comes
from being part of an
expansion of service
that Reena has now
undertaken. When I
began my term as
Chair, I hoped that I
would be able to redirect some of Reena’s
energies and focus towards serving children
with disabilities. Reena was founded in
1973 to provide services to adults with
developmental disabilities, and it
accomplished remarkable things over the
years; but Reena’s vision was to serve the
developmentally delayed from the cradle to
the grave, so to fulfill that vision it needed
to provide full services to children with
disabilities. Reena has operated a number of
programs for children for some time: Kids
Club, Cottage Reena, Reena Teen Scene and
the Reena March Break program. However,
much more is needed before we can say that
we have fulfilled the mandate we set for
ourselves. Now, with the generosity of the
Berg family, Reena has taken a major step
towards this goal. A new home for children
with autism is about to be opened and will
be known as the Yetta Berg Family Home
for Children with Autism, where three
children will live full time and three muchneeded respite spaces will be made available
to other families on a revolving basis.
The basic regret that I have as outgoing
Chair is that I was not able to accomplish
more, that no matter how much time I
spent on Reena matters, it was not enough;
but what was most disappointing to me was
to learn just how much time is needed and
spent on matters solely related to the issue
2

of funding. It seemed that in every
conversation I had and in every meeting
that I attended, the issue of funding was the
focal point. No matter how much money is
raised through the selfless efforts of Reena
volunteers and from the generous
contributions of Reena supporters, it is never
enough. Group homes are costly to own and
operate. Programs are curtailed because
there is inadequate financing. Staff are
overworked but underpaid. New ideas are
shelved because there is no money to fund
them. Every day, senior management has to
figure out how to allocate insufficient
money to not only operate the agency but to
try to improve and add to the services and
programs it does offer. Hopefully, those who
follow me will find a way to focus more of
their energy on service-related issues.
Gratitude is the easiest emotion to have
and enjoy. To all of the dedicated,
energetic, hardworking and committed
people who make up the face and character
of Reena; the tireless staff who help run the
agency on a daily basis; the patient, caring
workers who look after the difficult needs
of the clients; the individuals who provide
their time, business experience and acumen
to the Board, the Executive and the
committees; the volunteers who spend
their time and energy organizing special
events to raise money for Reena; the
Government, which, in a time of fiscal
responsibility and financial restraint, still
shows a social conscience and contributes
most of the money needed to run the
business of Reena; and, finally, the families
who entrust their loved ones to the care of
all those who ultimately make Reena what
it is — a wonderful caring agency; they all
deserve our utmost gratitude.
Notwithstanding the regrets and
frustrations that I experienced as Chair, the
wonderment and pride for Reena that I have
far surpasses everything else. Reena is truly
an amazing organization that has grown
and matured into one of the premier social
service agencies in all of Ontario. The people
who have made it so have done it by sheer
determination, commitment, energy, focus
and kindness, and deserve all of the
recognition and thanks we can give them. It
starts at the top, and no one can be thanked
and admired more than Sandy Keshen,
Reena’s Executive Director and CEO. It is
because of Reena’s many accomplishments
and good deeds that I can now pass the
gavel with a great sense of pride from
having been given the privilege and honour
of serving as Chair and for having been
associated with so many great people, to all
of whom I say thank you.
Reena Foundation
by Frank Simkevitz
As I began my term as Chair of the
Foundation last year at this time, I wanted
to continue the tradition established by my
predecessors. The role
of our Foundation is
to meet the shortfall
in the funding needs
of Reena. The key
areas in which the
Foundation can
provide assistance are
securing supplement
funding for programs and projects such as
respite, and raising funds for capital projects
like the ElderHome.
I am therefore pleased to report that
there have been positive changes in the
Reena Foundation in the past year. In July
2001, Gary Sim came on board as the
senior professional. As President of the
Foundation, his role is to help mobilize our
Foundation staff and our Board members;
to take the lead in raising the funds so
urgently needed by Reena; and to put in
place a strategic vision for the future. The
results are beginning to show. My special
thanks to Gary for his determination and
leadership. In addition, I’d like to
continued on next page
acknowledge the devotion and
commitment of Associate Director
Julea Gasner, Michelle Cole and
Sharon Brooker. Without them,
we would not succeed whatsoever.
We as a board decided to re-establish
our roots and have deliberately renewed
efforts to hold events that not only raise
the much-needed dollars, but broaden
awareness for Reena as well. The
Foundation Board has already begun to
diversify its membership and we are slowly
moving to a process that will ensure a
continuum of strong fundraising capability.
We were the recipients of several new
endowments and are actively seeking more.
They are all designated for Reena’s respite
activities (please see page 7).
I would be remiss if I did not thank our
Board members for their support and
enthusiasm. Each Board meeting is
highlighted by reports of new activities and
initiatives. Under the leadership of Ron
Segal, we developed a five-year plan that
will see our Foundation raise in excess of
$12 million. Murray Klein — well what
can be said about Murray Klein that can
match his achievements? He is a one-man
fundraising machine.
Al Libfeld not only brings many donors
to the table, but provides leadership and
delivers the Reena message to everyone
he knows about helping those with
developmental disabilities. Helen Fisch has
made a concerted effort to engage corporate
donors and her work will have long-term
financial benefits for Reena. Jeff Rayman,
Nathan Disenhouse, Frank Wilson,
Brian Orr, Paul Durigon, Mitchell Shnier
and Richard Lewin all bring fresh ideas,
new donors and their willingness to help
any time they are asked. Bill Schwalm and
Richard Cole continue to explore new ways
to support our activities.
Angela Iannuzziello has been
responsible for spearheading an initiative
to put into place a donor recognition
program so that we can properly and
regularly acknowledge the generosity of
our valued donors. Larry Berdugo has
seen to it that our Young Leadership
division continues its successful activities
and we hope it will take on a life of its
own over the next two years.
Our Special Events are co-ordinated
by Elaine Ross, whose long history with
Reena amply qualifies her to ensure that
our events are meaningful and successful.
Seymour Schwartz is always there —
whether to ask someone for money, to
lend his name to a fundraising initiative
or simply to bounce ideas off and give
his moral support. Finally, there are
two people who I must thank for their
guidance and support: Gerald Hartman,
Immediate Past Chair of the Foundation,
and Howard Ungerman, Chair of the
Reena Board: Gerald for his knowledge
and understanding and Howard for his
undying commitment to Reena.
I do not express my thanks often
enough. I am truly blessed to have such a
supportive group of people around me and
I hope I will continue to be able to draw on
their support for the coming year.
Executive Director’s Report
by Sandy Keshen
The 2002 Reena Gala Dinner was, by all
accounts, a most successful event. It
brought together long-time Reena
supporters who have
been generous
contributors over the
years, and many
individuals and
corporations who
were introduced to
Reena’s work in the
community by John Bitove, the dinner
honouree. As Chair and CEO of priszm
brandz, which operates more than 770 Taco
Bell and KFC restaurants, John put his
entire organization behind his pledge to
help Reena build a home for Reena’s
seniors. In addition, John is committed to
making certain that Reena stands front and
centre as a leading provider of services for
people with developmental disabilities.
In his heart-warming address from the
podium, John stated, “It should be the
mission of every business leader in the
country to ‘step up to the plate’ when he or
she is called upon to get involved for
people in need.” Thanks to the Bitove
connection, representatives of many megacorporations attended the dinner and were
impressed by what they heard and saw. It
is our hope that their interest will lead to
employment opportunities for Reena’s
clients, the building of affordable
community housing and the expansion of
Reena’s financial support.
The Gala also attracted many federal,
provincial and local politicians. The
Honorable Brenda Elliott, Minister of
Community, Family and Children’s Services,
brought greetings from the provincial
government and outlined the importance
of addressing the needs of the most
vulnerable people in our community.
She went on to say, “Private and public
partnerships, like this one created
tonight by Reena and John Bitove, best
demonstrate the benefits of communities
coming together. Thanks to their joint
collaboration on the creation of a Reena
ElderHome, aging clients will benefit
from specialized residential supports.”
In his remarks, Vaughan Mayor
Michael D’Biasi spoke of the good
relationship that has existed for many years
between the City of Vaughan and Reena. He
pledged his continued official and personal
support of Reena in the community.
So, on behalf of the many individuals
whose lives will be enhanced through the
success of the 2002 Reena Gala, I sincerely
thank John Bitove, his wife, Randi,
and his family for their outstanding
commitment to Reena and to people
with developmental disabilities.

It was a full house for the Annual General

emotions as he took on his new role of
Immediate Past Chair. He spoke of his
satisfaction in knowing that the programs
for children with developmental disabilities,
initiated during his chairmanship, are doing
so well. However, he expressed regret that so
much time needed to be spent on matters
solely related to funding (see his full report
on page 2). At the end of his report, Howard
introduced Fay Rotman, the incoming Chair
of Reena, and accepted a plaque as a token of

Reena Foundation
Dedication of the Irving and Sylvia Ungerman
Sports Centre
by Julea Gasner, Associate Director, Reena Foundation
I
t’s not often that a family gets a second
opportunity to be recognized and honoured for
their generosity and commitment. At Reena’s
Annual General meeting on Tue. June 25,
2002, Irving and Sylvia Ungerman had that
opportunity with the unveiling and dedication
of the Irving and Sylvia Ungerman Sports
Centre in the Toby and Henry Battle
Developmental Centre.
The Ungermans have long been
associated with Reena, primarily as the
benefactors of the Ungerman Sports
Complex at Camp Reena. Irving, a local
entrepreneur and well-known community
personality, believed that disabled children
and teens should have the same opportunities
to participate in leisure and sports activities
as other children. He campaigned to raise
the funds needed to build and equip the
Ungerman Sports Centre,
which was the focal point of
Camp Reena for many years.

expanded, traditional camping

Character building at work
never knew that working at the local
Wal-Mart would be so rewarding. I haven’t
much work experience — a few small jobs
selling Avon, working in a cafe, a bookstore
placement and a little babysitting. It was
something, but I felt that I could do better.
I had earned three credits in English at
George Brown College and had a 3.7 GPA.
After that, I took a program for consumer
survivors at Seneca College called Work
on Track.
The challenge was to let go of my fear
of work. Each day, we were taught new
things like balancing our job and personal
life, dealing with change, relaxation,
motivation, learning styles and how to
have satisfaction from work.
Through the program, I was given
placements at The Body Shop and WalMart. Ever since I was 13 years old, I
thought a soap store would be more fun
and interesting and a department store
seemed boring. I did four shifts at The
Body Shop and realized that it was not for
me — the work was too slow, the dress
code too boring (all black is not my style
because I need my individuality), and I

was not learning how to deal with people.
My employment specialist, Delores, is a
genuine angel — a breath of fresh air. She
calmed my soul about the long hours and
let me try to build
myself up at WalMart. Delores
believed that I was
capable and wanted
me to try a challenge.

Wal-Mart is a great working
environment. I am learning how to get
along with people and that builds character
and makes me proud of myself.
I recently got a paying job at Wal-Mart
and could not be happier because at the
end of my shift I realize that I have been
able to help customers. The question still
comes from many people, “Why work?”
My answer is, “Why not?” It builds selfcharacter.
