In front of a panel of three judges, Mr Cageao, Miss Hayes and Miss McConnell, the finalists spoke on a range of topics from skiing and extreme sports to trips to foreign parts and took questions most competently from their Year 7 peers. The finalists were Amy Seal, Sam Pepler, Rozalia Moore, Jed Pleavin, Eddie Erskine, Michael McNee, Will Nurse and Aina Romero-Haupold O’Neale, a Spanish pupil from the EAL department. Winner of 2015 for his entertaining and knowledgeable talk on the Greek gods. Joint runner-up positions were awarded to Amy for her persuasive speech on vegetarianism (no more bacon for Year 7) and also to Aina, who spoke in remarkably fluent English about her love of animals from inside her woolly wolf jumpsuit! (Apparently she’s been a devoted wolf fan since hearing the Red Riding Story at a tender young age!) However, it was Billy’s informative speech on huskies that won over his Year 7 listeners as he was subsequently voted the audience’s favourite (or was it the cute pictures of husky pups that did it?). The standard was as high as ever and the judges faced a difficult decision but in the end Sam was crowned the judges Speak Out Mrs Lacey Messages from the Head Boy and Head Girl I cannot believe I’m coming to the end of my time as Head Girl. It has gone so quickly. From the day I got the phone call, till now it’s been a whirlwind of amazing experiences. My initial concerns of having to sit at the front of assembly were overtaken by blind panic, when Mrs Shayler asked me out of the blue to read a complicated passage of text to the whole school. I have to say English is not my strong point! And I never knew I could go so red! As they say, practice makes perfect and I can now speak with only turning a slight shade of pink! My time as Head Boy has been extremely fun and enjoyable. I have given several tours to both parents and inspectors. Lily, the Head Girl, and I were chosen to decide the menu for the Monitors’ Christmas Party. Every Thursday break I spent with Mrs Shayler and Lily discussing the upcoming week of events. Every Friday I was allowed to hand out stickers in the award assembly to the star Pre-Prep pupils of the week, seeing their faces filled with happiness and joy. My favourite part of being Head Boy was the company of Mrs Shayler, Lily, Mr Close and Mrs Hazell. They were really nice, saying ‘well done’ after reading. Being Head Boy was an honour and a memory to cherish. I would definitely suggest it to anyone as it is exciting and a great honour. Tom Maddock, Head Boy Pre-Prep assembly has been the highlight of my week, every Friday morning. I have surprised myself by how much I have enjoyed giving tours to new people. This is also something I was nervous about because I am quite a shy person. I would like to thank all my friends for being so supportive over this last term. It’s been great to get to know Tom, the Head boy, and also all the other members of staff. I would also like to thank the non-teaching members of staff who have all been extremely kind and helpful and I have enjoyed getting to know them! Lily Della Valle, Head Girl HOME Millfield Prep Newsletter ● Issue 587 ● 14 December 2015 Prep School Christmas Musical Page 3 Guys and Dolls Fiction blurred with reality this week at the Juniors performance of Prep School Christmas Musical, parents fought for the best seats, children were ill and missed their performance, and the teachers were at their wits end - that was only the scripted version! But, as in every fairy tale, everything was alright on the night and the children turned out some stellar performances. Highlights included the grumpy kitchen staff, the competitive parents, the auditioning hopefuls and the very angelic Year 3 pupils who played the part of Pre-Prep children. The narrative was held together by Grace Olding as the Headteacher, Miss Bright, along with William Thomas and Alexandra Baughan as her Deputies. They were faced with some over zealous junior teachers, keen to put on a nativity (Kizzi Reed, Chumba Koech, Isaac Searle and Ben Bradshaw) pitted against the Pre-Prep teachers, who lost their Christmas spirit a long time ago. Here are some quotes from our fantastic cast and crew: “I liked the scenes with all the guys.” Tom Maddock, aka Madd Dog “I loved being a stuck-up rich woman in the song ‘Guys and Dolls’.” Harry Dimdore-Miles, aka Millie the Hot Box Dancer “Being a Hotbox Dancer was amazing. I always looked forward to dance rehearsals.” Polly Painter, aka Hot Box Dancer “It was good fun being the bad guy.” Henry Smeed, aka Brannigan “Sparkly hats, pink tops, cowboy boots – what more could you want?” Maria Elliott, aka Liberty “I liked being part of the production, it was like a harmonious team.” Mac Ryder, aka Big Jule “I thought pulling curtains was a very important job. I think I coped under the pressure.” Jack Fry, aka Curtain Puller “I loved being able to manage Mac Ryder, aka Big Jule. It was nice to intimidate people.” Ryan Bisaso Kiggundu, aka Harry the Horse However, the tedium of rehearsals soon brought the Juniors back to earth, the children rebelled, led by stage school prima donnas Kyle and Leona (Ellis James and Stephanie Blinman) and the teachers finally quit. The heroes of the hour turned out to be the shy and nervous Jamie and Lily (Lachie Sawrey-Cookson and Maisie Zander) who were left to pick up the pieces, pull the other children together and put on a show that no one would forget. We would like to thank all the children for their hard work learning their lines, song words and choreography. The whole of the Junior department were involved in this massive production, with over fifty speaking parts, in addition to small group solos and dance routines. It has been a pleasure to watch the children grow in confidence and self-esteem throughout the rehearsal process and their smiles on the night were an absolute delight. Many thanks to the various staff members who helped the production to run smoothly, and special thanks to: Mrs Borenstein, who is tasked with songs and music and spent many a break time rehearsing small groups, Mr Kemp, Mrs Allen and the prop making club for the wonderful scenery and all the Junior staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes organising costumes, raffles, lighting and refreshments, while wondering if they will ever get to teach a maths lesson again! Our thanks must finally go to all parents for your support in providing bits and pieces for costumes, helping children with their lines and supporting us on the night through donations for the raffle and tipping our long suffering busker (Grace Olding). In the end we raised over £120 which will be put towards costumes for our Shakespeare Mash Up production next term. The children have certainly earned a well deserved rest over Christmas before auditions commence again in the New Year. Happy Christmas! Mrs Seal “I may not have had a big part but it was great just being part of it.” Connor Collins, aka, Calvin “Just being curtain man made me realise the importance of every little role.” Sander Ranson, aka Curtain Man “I liked the competitiveness of trying to win an imaginary husband in the Hot Box.” Darcy Zander, aka Mary Lou …………………………………………………………………………………………………………. We had laughs, fancy-dress and songs - what more do you need? The children all seemed to enjoy it and we just knew that custard pie would get him in the end! Special thanks to Mr James and his seriously sinister evil-genius laugh! Years 4 to 6 enjoyed a one-man version of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol. There were a great many hats involved and an awful lot of energy - and it was brilliant! Have a lovely Christmas everyone and, as Tiny Tim so wisely says, God Bless Us, Every One! The educational workshop told us a lot about Roman tombstones (interesting up to a point!) and then we were able to look at and handle artefacts found at the baths, including building materials, personal possessions and items thrown into the water for good luck. They celebrated Nell’s Birthday and on Sunday went tobogganing followed by the Boarders’ Christmas dinner where they donned some fabulously painted faces! On Sunday the Chestnut boys had an early start with breakfast in house and then we headed off to our first destination which was Go Karting and Laser Tag in Weston Super Mare. The boys had a great time speeding around the track with only a few minor collisions with the tyre walls! Then they had a shoot-em-out against each other zapping away with the laser guns. Next stop after this was AirHop in Bristol where the boys bounced away to their heart’s content.
