Oak Grove Baptist Church David Hall, Senior Minister www.oakgrovebaptist.com MythBusters Series: “Jesus Did Not Need His Blood” Hebrews 9:11-22 to Shed October 7, 2007 Introduction: You are looking at a sample of the rarest blood type on this planet. One-half percent of the world’s population has this blood type. To put it another way one person in 167 has this blood type. It is AB Negative. Back in high school my boss had AB negative - Lester Parrish. He carried a beeper with him and no matter the time of day, if that beeper went off, he put down what he was doing and got in his car and sped off, because it was the local hospital and they needed him to donate his rare and precious blood. The practice of transfusing blood first took place in the 1600s. Appalling as it may sound, animal blood was transfused into human beings for almost 200 years with disastrous consequences. Speaking of rare blood types: rarer still is the blood of Jesus Christ. It is symbolized in the juice that is in this cup I hold. This morning we will be partaking in the drinking of this juice (that symbolizes His blood) and so begs the question: Did Jesus need to shed His blood? Was His blood necessary for our salvation? Many people today do not want to talk about the blood shed on Calvary. But that is exactly what I am going to do this morning as we bust the myth: Jesus Did Not Need to Shed His Blood. Focal Scripture: Heb 9:11-22 When Christ came as high priest of the good things that are already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man-made, that is to say, not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! 15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance-now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. 16 In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19 When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20 He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep." 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. (from New International Version) 1. The Blood Comes_____ From A Supernatural Person______. Savior_________ What makes His blood so special? His very name “Jesus” means “Jehovah is Salvation” You can hang me on a cross and you can make me bleed, but I’m not a savior. Jesus said of Himself : I came to seek and to save that which was lost. Sinless________ John 1:1 and following. Hebrews 4:15 Superior_______ According to Hebrews, Jesus is superior for many reasons: (1) He lives forever, (2) He is set apart from sinners - that is - He is holy, blameless, and pure. (3) He became a sacrifice for our sins (4) He was appointed by God (5) He is at the right hand of God Sufficient_____ Hebrews 7:27 ((Automaker Henry Ford asked electrical genius Charlie Steinmetz to build the generators for his factory. One day the generators ground to a halt, and the repairmen couldn’t find the problem. So Ford called Steinmetz, who tinkered with the machines for a few hours and then threw the switch. The generators whirred to life. Later Ford got a bill from Steinmetz for $10,000. Flabbergasted, the rather tightfisted car maker inquired why the bill was high and asked for a breakdown of the bill. Steinmetz’s reply: for tinkering with the generators, $10. For knowing where to tinker, $9,990.00. Ford paid the bill.)) 2. The Blood Cleanses___ With A Supernatural Power________. The Problem_______: Our Hearts_____ are defiled because of our Desires_______ Our Heads______ are defiled because of our Deliberations_ Our Hands______ are defiled because of our Deeds_________ ((A man and his family here sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, not far from Havre de Grace. He had little experience and he had never been in waters where you have to navigate. Unfortunately, he ran aground. The Coast Guard came to his aid and towed him back into safe waters. When they asked to see his navigational charts he handed them a Rand McNally road map. He had been trying to navigate (very unsuccessfully I might add) with a road map on the Chesapeake Bay and not a nautical chart. For those of you that don’t know what a nautical chart is - it shows the depth of water, obstacles, and channels. Too many people are navigating through life with the wrong map and guidance. They are relying on their own ability to make sense of things. They are making up their own rules as they go - of course with disastrous consequences.)) The Penalty_______ The Power_________ making red water clear)) ((Drinking water tablets - making dirty water safe or 3. The Blood Completes_ A Supernatural Purpose______. The Purpose_____ is Stated You were made by God, for God. But as a sinner you fell out of fellowship with God. Your sin separated you from God. Man is a sinner by nature and choice. The Price_______ was Paid But while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the unrighteous. You might ask: “Why did God give us a choice, why didn’t He make us so that we would not sin?” LISTEN - love does not demand its own way. Love demands a choice. The Pardon______ is Offered God provides a way for us to get back into fellowship with Him. A father and son worked for months to build a toy sailboat. Every night when he came home from work, the man and his boy would disappear into the garage for hours. It was a labor of love--love for each other and for the thing they were creating. The wooden hull was painted bright red and it was trimmed with gleaming white sails. When it was finished, they traveled to a nearby lake for the boat's trial run. Before launching it the father tied a string to its stern to keep it from sailing too far. The boat performed beautifully, but before long a motorboat crossing the lake cut the string, and the sailboat drifted out of sight on the large lake. Attempts to find it were fruitless, and both father and son wept over its loss. A few weeks later as the boy was walking home from school he passed his favorite toy store and was amazed to see a toy sailboat in the window-his sailboat! He ran inside to claim the boat, telling the storekeeper about his experience on the lake. The store owner explained that he had found the boat while on a fishing trip. "You may be its maker," he said, "but as a finder I am its legal owner. You may have it back--for fifty dollars." The boy was stunned at how much it would cost him to regain his boat, but since it was so precious to him he quickly set about earning the money to buy it back. Months of hard work later he joyfully walked into the toy store and handed the owner fifty dollars in exchange for his sailboat. It was the happiest day of his life. As he left the store he held the boat up to the sunlight. Its colors gleamed as though newly painted. "I made you, but I lost you," he said. "Now at great sacrifice I have bought you back. That makes you twice mine, and twice mine is mine forever.
