What the Half Rectangle ruler does:
The Half Rectangle ruler is designed to make half-rectangle triangles. Combined with the Bias Triangle (#NNBT) the
Half Rectangle will make Triangle-in-a-Square Blocks.
Because of the angled notch at
the top of the Half Rectangle,
pieces will stitch and fit
together perfectly!

using the half rectangle Ruler
1. Determine your finished block size.
2. Cut fabric strips to the finished block size plus ½” for seam allowances. For example, if your finished block
size is 4”, cut 4½” strips.
3. Find the Nifty Notions logo on the ruler. Lay the ruler on your strip so you can read the words Nifty Notions.
4. Line the left edge of the ruler with the edge of your strip. Place the excess fabric to the right if you are right-handed
and to the left if you are left-handed. Place the tip of the ruler on the top edge of your fabric. Make your first cut.
Second Cut
First Cut
1. Flip the ruler so the words Nifty Notions are now upside down. Line the cut edge of the fabric with the angled edge
of the ruler. Place the tip of the ruler on the bottom edge of the fabric, and make your cut.
2. Return the ruler to the original position and continue cutting until you have as many pieces as you need. For faster
cutting or for mirror pieces, double your fabric strip.
Notice the tiny little notch in the upper left hand
corner of the ruler? Be sure to cut this notch on all
pieces. It will make it easy to line up your pieces
when you sew them together.
An example of how the half rectangle stands alone to make a
great block—all from one size strip. For this block, use 8 half
rectangles and 5 squares from the same size strip.
For this block, join a pair of half rectangles with
one bias triangle—all from the same size strip.
