But even in a state of disrepair, they knew they’d found a grand building that one day could make you say “Wow”. A year and a half later, the newly remodeled home has more than a new coat of paint. It’s computer‐ready. It has modern electrical, Plumbing, Heating and Air conditioning.. It’s now a spacious office with 13 foot ceilings. The Nowak’s kept the mansion’s historic grandeur and they brought back its original name: Spruce Acres. Before the Civil War, runaway slaves are said to have slept here in secret rooms. It was one stop along the underground railroad. Abolitionist Quakers kept a library in the mansion. Scores of those antislavery books are now housed at Swarthmore College. Spruce Acres is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Camden Historic District. This mansion is one of Delaware’s few examples of Greek Revival architecture. It was as unique a home when it was built in 1840 as it is a unique office space now. There were times when Andy and Jen Nowak thought all they had was a money pit. But after a year and a half of hard work, it’s become far more than that. As Andy put it, “When you see it now, you can’t help but say, ‘Wow’.” Then ‐ 1938 Restored - 2007
