With over 20 years’ experience in the delivery of sustainable design solutions, Matthew has led engineering teams from project inception to completion and has a broad knowledge of all aspects of the design, delivery and handover process. Page 10 Capability We have extensive experience in all forms of construction projects, from new build to refurbishment, fast track to modular. Our knowledge gained in the education sector is conveyed through our design delivery to satisfy our clients’ individual requirements, providing a building which looks towards our future expectations. We believe sustainability should be at the heart of the design and construction process, and this ethos is embodied within our design work to provide buildings which optimises efficiencies and meet our client’s aspirations. Whether it is the experience of the student or the client, at MLM we acknowledge these are buildings which are used by a diverse number and cross section of people. Integrating their requirements into the design of the building with facilities which meet both the end user and the sustainability aspirations is a key principle in achieving a successful project. Page 11 Environment Planning and Development At MLM we specialise in offering a fresh and forward thinking approach in the provision of early advice to clients and planning professionals. Educational facilities are often located on brownfield land, either redeveloping existing land or by conversion of existing facilities. As such, they often require a co-ordinated approach to feasibility studies, due diligence reports, planning reports and applications, and obtaining various statutory body approvals. We aim to contribute effectively to the early stages of planning and development to maximise site potential. We offer a proactive, fully co-ordinated approach to due diligence, feasibility and planning to capitalise on site development potential. We understand the process of due diligence, acquisition and divestiture of a site and have an “eye” for commercial viability. We can provide expert advice on relevant acts, legislation and other regulatory, advisory and good practice guidelines affecting educational developments. We have extensive understanding and experience of development constraints, including land quality, flood risk, site access, transportation, environmental impact, ecological mitigation and sustainability. Our multidisciplinary or single engineering discipline teams work in all parts of the education sector. They provide comprehensive support throughout education projects, from initial design support at concept stage, through planning and tender processes, detailed design and throughout construction, right up to completion. We adopt a commercial and innovative approach to delivering buildings and infrastructure, using BIM and advanced modelling technology to resolve increasingly complex planning and design issues. Our expertise covers the full project life cycle of the building from inception to completion, and includes all of the technical engineering disciplines required to deliver a successful project. We specialise in both traditional and modern methods of construction to suit the client and project requirements. Our knowledge of delivering low-carbon solutions and navigating the team through the legislative and practical implications of design have successfully provided cost and value benefits to our clients. Page 15 Compliance Our approach to compliance is to listen to and engage with the client, the design team and all stakeholders in the education environment. Our involvement at the early stages, particularly from MLM Building Control, will ensure compliance issues are understood and effectively risk managed to provide planning, design, delivery and cost certainty. We adopt a flexible approach that is both proactive and commercially aware. We provide clients and stakeholders with practical and commercial advice, design and solutions. These include renewable energy studies, sustainability statements, ecological and environmental mitigation, materials reuse assessments, and sustainable building, infrastructure and transportation design. We provide strategic and technical advice to allow the team to navigate through the competing legislative requirements and aspirational drivers for projects. Buildings and infrastructure have a significant impact on the environment, through the emission of greenhouse gases, the production of waste and the consumption of water and construction materials. Innovation plays a large part in delivering real value cost effectively, and our approach is to understand the client brief and then deliver solutions which meet and exceed those needs. Our responsible approach to sustainable design and practice is at the heart of our business and embedded in the way we deliver our technical advice.
