(504) 534-8642 [email protected] www.mhatours.com The Battle of the Bulge and the Crossing of the Rhine Tour April 2017 Day 3 – Malmedy to Luxembourg We say goodbye to Spa and continue on our tour of the Northern Shoulder with visits to St. Vith, Trois Ponts, Stavelot and Malmedy, where 84 American POWs were murdered by the Nazis. We finish the tour today at the La Gleize Church outside the town of Stoumont, where the church’s Madonna was saved by one of the American “Monuments Men.” We then make our way south to Lippersheid, Luxembourg and the spectacular Sporthotel Leweck Resort, our home for the next three nights. (B,D) The valor and Liberation Series The Battle of the Bulge and the Crossing of the Rhine tour Join the World War II History Club of The Villages and MHA Tours on this incredible tour of Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany and the areas made famous in the “Battle of the Bulge.” Enjoy deluxe accommodations and service while learning about the largest battle ever fought by the US Army, and the decisive moment in determining the outcome of the Second World War on the Western Front. Day 1 – HURTGEN FOREST, HENRI-CHAPELLE CEMETERY and spa After arriving at Dusseldorf Airport, we begin our journey with a group lunch in Aachen, the first city in Germany to be liberated by the Allies. Continue on a tour of the Hurtgen Forest area of Germany, followed by a visit to the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. Arrive this evening in historic resort city of Spa, Belgium and enjoy a welcome dinner and lecture by our featured tour historian. (L,D) Day 2 – The Northern Shoulder Today we will visit the areas that became known as the “Northern Shoulder,” where American units suddenly found themselves on the receiving end of a massive German offensive. Learn about the heroic small unit actions at places like Hollerath and the Elsenborn Ridge that staved off a complete collapse of the Allied front, and allowed reinforcements to be brought into the battle. The group will have lunch near one of the fiercest armored engagements. (B,L) Day 4 – Bastogne Today we visit Bastogne, where the 101st Airborne Division famously held off a German armored force for more than a week while being entirely surrounded and outnumber 5-to-1, until Patton’s 3rd Army arrived in relief. Tour the foxholes of the venerable “Easy Company” of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the Bois Jacques, and learn more about the siege at the Bastogne War Museum, and the Bastogne Barracks. Enjoy a group dinner in Bastogne before returning to our hotel. (B,D) Day 5 – Wiltz, Diekirch & Ettelbruck Today the tour visits the areas of Luxembourg that, while not as well known as Bastogne, were nevertheless the site of fierce engagements. Hear the story of Day Turner, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions here, from our local expert battlefield guide. After a group lunch, we will receive a guided tour of Luxembourg’s National Military History Museum in Diekirch, as well as Ettelbruck, the small city which was finally liberated by Patton’s 3rd Army on Christmas Day 1944. (B,L) Day 6 – luxembourg We bid farewell to Luxembourg with a tour of the country’s capital, Luxembourg City, and the Patton Chapel at Fondation Pescatore, as well as the Place d’Armes. In the afternoon we visit Luxembourg American Cemetery, where more than 5,000 American service members are buried, including Day Turner and General George Patton, Jr. We continue northeast into Germany to the beautiful town of Boppard, on the banks of the majestic Rhine River. (B,D) Day 7 – The Rhineland On the final full day of the tour, we begin by making a brief stop in the town of Urmitz, where Caesar constructed bridges during the Gallic Wars. We continue north to the city of Cologne and its iconic Cathedral, where we will be given a guided tour. From there we will head back upriver to Bonn, the one-time capital of West Germany, and enjoy a group lunch at the Hotel Dreesen, reputed to be one of Hitler’s favorites. We continue to Remagen, one-time site of the famous bridge that allowed American forces to cross the mighty river and enter Germany en masse. We say farewell to our tour with a sunset dinner cruise along the Rhine to Boppard.
