ALLEGANY ARTS COUNCIL
MOUNTAIN MARYLAND
STUDIO TOUR 2016
October 22–23 & October 29–30 • 11am–5pm
W
elcome to the Mountain Maryland 2016 Studio Tour. This year is the 14th year of the annual event and we’re happy to say that each year it
keeps getting better. We know you’ll enjoy driving around our beautiful
countryside during prime fall foliage and exploring our charming, friendly towns as you visit the studios of talented local artists.
With this guidebook you will have access to an arts experience you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Every year, artists who have been drawn to our beautiful area literally open their doors to visitors. This is your chance to visit with Mountain Maryland artists where they live and work, learn about their techniques and, of course, purchase some art for your home or as a gift. Whether it is painting, photography, furniture, ceramics or
jewelry, you’ll find it on the Studio Tour.
If you are not sure where to start your tour, we recommend visiting the
Allegany Arts Council’s art gallery at 9 N. Centre Street in Cumberland.
There you will find an exciting exhibit featuring the work of Studio Tour
participants. You can browse the exhibition and then map out a plan for
visiting the studios of your choice! This exhibition will open at the Allegany
Arts Council on October 15, 2016, and run through November 12. The
opening reception, to which you are invited, will be held on Saturday, October 15 from 6 to 8 pm. This reception is another great opportunity to meet Studio Tour aritsts. While you are driving around, consider using the Studio Tour website (www.artsaleandtour.com), which has artist
information and a map so you’ll be able to find your way around easily.
On behalf of the arts community of Mountain Maryland, I welcome
you to our region and hope you enjoy your visit.
See you soon in Mountain Maryland!

gifts or accents for your home.
Terry’s distinctive photographs in
handmade frames are also available
and furniture and sculpture will be
on hand, too. Terry is delighted to
welcome back Patricia Hilton to
join him at the gallery, showing her

Blacksmithing
B
lacksmithing has a very long
history. Kenny applies traditional
and more contemporary techniques
of forging to his design, furthering
his goals of creating art and
preserving ancient craftsmanship.
Using a coal forge, hammer
and anvil, he makes tools that
enable him to hone his craft and
create art and functional objects.
Blacksmithing also provides the
opportunity to “think out of the
box,” allowing him to design to
suit his needs. Because working
sculpturally in metal often results
in a less predictable flow, and
perspective shifts depending on
the angle from which a piece is viewed, Kenny’s metalwork is a tangible result of exploration 93 Carey Run Road
and discovery.

lizabeth has been a commission
artist since 1986, when she
opened Elizabeth’s Glassworks
LLC, a custom art glass studio.
Working in architectural glass,
using traditional leaded glass,
copper foil, sandblasting, as well
as non-traditional techniques, has
been her privilege and her passion.
She was a creative writing major
in college and considers much of
her sculptural work to be a form of
visual poetry. In 2010 she moved
to West Virginia, and her studio is
her big barn on the Little Cacapon
River. A lot of her work now
reflects the peace and beauty of the
natural world that surrounds her.

at’s paintings are loosely realistic,
with interpretive color. She creates
or uses the color of the painting
surface as one element, building on
it through a combination of color
fields and marks, working toward a
painting that has both abstract and
realistic elements. Each painting
contains a spark: the “why’”of the
painting—such as a particular
quality of light or a dynamic pattern
of shadows, settling fog, sparkling
water. Pat enjoys working “en plein
air” and is inspired by quality of
light and pattern. She has lived in

fter graduating with a design
degree from Frostburg State
University, Steve spent two years
in Japan, which had a profound
effect on his perspective as an
artist. His goal when throwing,
glazing, altering, decorating or
firing is to create surfaces that
reflect the process and forces that
go into turning a piece of clay into
a functional piece of pottery. He
especially loves making mugs:
“I make every mug with the
hope that it will become part of
somebody’s daily morning ritual,”
he says. During this year’s tour,
weather permitting, Steve will
include demonstrations of the
Raku firing process.

estern Maryland’s best-kept
secret is there’s lots of art in
“them thar hills.” Sure, there’s
hiking and biking, camping and
kayaking, riding scenic railroads
and lots of getting close to nature,
but there is also a vibrant, thriving
arts community in the mountains.
The Mountain Maryland Plein
Air event is the premier painting
event in Allegany and Garrett
counties. Artists from all over the
country come to the mountains to
compete for more than $11,000 in
prizes. For visitors, this week-long
event in early June is packed
with activities. Art lectures,
demonstrations and fun
“quickdraw” events are just some
of the attractions. The Allegany
National Photography
Competition and Exhibition
is another crowd pleaser. This
event occurs during April, which
is Photography Month in Allegany
County. The month is filled with
workshops, lectures and children’s
programs. The highlight of the
month is the must-see
photography show.
The Will’s Creek Exhibition is another well-established
Mountain Maryland tradition. For the past 17 years, tourists

and residents have enjoyed this
unique exhibition of contemporary
art, which takes place each
September. This cutting-edge
exhibition taps into the pulse of
American art as well as the pulse
of art in Western Maryland. Year
after year, local artists are invited
to exhibit at the Arts Council’s two
galleries, demonstrating the
vitality of the Mountain Maryland
art scene. It doesn’t stop there.
Each year the area hosts literary
arts events, traditional arts
festivals, theater performances and
a multitude of musical events.
For example, each year the
Frostburg Center for Literary Arts
hosts a one-act play competition
and an Indie Lit festival. Mountain
City Traditional Arts, which has a
store in Frostburg, organizes
an annual Appalachian festival at
Frostburg State University. And
if there’s not enough bluegrass
there for you, check out Delfest.
This popular annual music
festival held at the Allegany
County Fairgrounds draws
thousands of music lovers to
non-stop bluegrass and country
music every Memorial Day
weekend.
Cumberland comes alive
every summer weekend with
evening outdoor music on the
pedestrian mall or at the Canal
Place festival grounds. If your
musical taste runs more classical
or toward jazz, check out the
numerous performances of

If you are interested in
catching a theater performance,

numerous local venues, including
