The great thing about Stonehenge is, we don’t know exactly how or why it was built! The Stonehenge we know today took nearly 1,000 years to build. It was finished over 5,000 years ago. The stones line up with the mid-summer sunrise and the mid-winter sunset. The most famous stones are the bluestones. They are grey, but appear blue when wet. One third of each stone is underground - like giant teeth in gums! The stones come from the Preseli mountains in Wales. We don’t know how they were moved to where they are. Some people think they were dragged to the sea and brought up the River Avon on rafts. Others believe they were moved by a wizard called Merlin - or even the devil!
