8-7 Solving ax2 + bx + c = 0
Factor π’‚π’™πŸ + bx + c To factor a trinomial of the form π‘Žπ‘₯ 2 + bx + c, find two integers, m and p whose product is equal
to ac and whose sum is equal to b. If there are no integers that satisfy these requirements, the polynomial is called a prime
polynomial.
Example 1: Factor 2π’™πŸ + 15x + 18.
Example 2: Factor 3π’™πŸ – 3x – 18.
Exercises
Factor each polynomial, if possible. If the polynomial cannot be factored using integers, write prime.
1. 2π‘₯ 2 – 3x – 2
2. 3π‘š2 – 8m – 3
3. 16π‘Ÿ 2 – 8r + 1
4. 6π‘₯ 2 + 5x – 6
5. 3π‘₯ 2 + 2x – 8
6. 18π‘₯ 2 – 27x – 5
7. 2π‘Ž2 + 5a + 3
8. 18𝑦 2 + 9y – 5
9. –4𝑑 2 + 19t – 21
10. 8π‘₯ 2 – 4x – 24
11. 28𝑝2 + 60p – 25
12. 48π‘₯ 2 + 22x – 15
13. 3𝑦 2 – 6y – 24
14. 4π‘₯ 2 + 26x – 48
15. 8π‘š2 – 44m + 48
16. 6π‘₯ 2 – 7x + 18
17. 2π‘Ž2 – 14a + 18
18. 18 + 11y + 2𝑦 2
Solve Equations by Factoring Factoring and the Zero Product Property can be used to solve some equations of the
form aπ‘₯ 2 + bx + c = 0.
Example: Solve 12π’™πŸ + 3x = 2 – 2x.
Exercises
Solve each equation.
1. 8π‘₯ 2 + 2x – 3 = 0
2. 3𝑛2 – 2n – 5 = 0
3. 2𝑑 2 – 13d – 7 = 0
4. 4π‘₯ 2 = x + 3
5. 3π‘₯ 2 – 13x = 10
6. 6π‘₯ 2 – 11x – 10 = 0
7. 2π‘˜ 2 – 40 = –11k
8. 2𝑝2 = –21p – 40
9. –7 – 18x + 9π‘₯ 2 = 0
10. 8π‘₯ 2 + 5x = 3 + 7x
11. 4π‘Ž2 – 18a + 5 = 15
12. 3𝑏 2 – 18b = 10b – 49
