Year 4

Year 4
The children have been fascinated by the History Topic about World War 11 this term. Everyone
thoroughly enjoyed our class trip to Kent Life Museum when they experienced what it would
have been like to be an evacuee during wartime. Not only did they write letters and factual recounts, but they explored the feelings of those children far away from their family and friends.
Whilst learning about the Science
topic, States of Matter, the children
investigated the effect of temperature
on solids, liquids and gases. In addition,
cross-curricular links were made with
English as they dramatised the
arrangement of molecules that are either packed tightly together in solids
or spread far apart in gases. Further
use of scientific vocabulary was
employed when explaining the evaporation and condensation of water in the continuous
process of the water cycle.
Last but not least, the children fully embraced the non-fiction topic about the Shang Dynasty
and wrote comprehensive reports about its origin. They even experimented with Chinese writing, which proved a little tricky when writing vertically! Finally, the children have thoroughly impressed me with their own creative poetry this term that was packed full of powerful imagery.
They analysed poems as if they were experts and wrote beautifully illustrated Cinquains that
now take pride of place on display.
Also, let us not forget the wonderful
assembly when Mary was crowned as
Our Lady and the moving re-enacted
story of her first apparition to the
Fatima children one hundred years ago.
Well done Year 4G – you should be justly proud of yourselves!
Year 4
The children have been completely absorbed by the Geography Topic about Europe this term.
With cooperation between them, they have created a European map for the class display. To
show their knowledge of different countries, the children have matched flags to the countries
they belong to on the interactive display and researched landmarks, capital cities etc. for their
European passports!
In addition, cross-curricular links were made with Design Technology as the children designed
and created a pizza whilst celebrating a national dish of Italy. They kneaded the pizza dough with
such vigour that, I apologise, a few children went home a little floury that day!
Whilst learning about the Science topic, Living Things and their Habitats, the
children went on a bug hunt to investigate where mini-beasts live and what
would affect them if something happened to their environment. This was
further explored when looking at the human impact on
different Biomes such as the Rainforest.
Last but not least, the children fully embraced the Fiction
topic, listening to the Spiderwick Chronicles with enthusiasm
and anticipation for the next chapter. They have thoroughly
impressed me with their own creative writing that was
packed full of rich, descriptive language to set the scene
whilst building tension when developing the story line. Well
done Year 4G – another successful and fun term!
Year 4
The children have fully immersed themselves in the Roman topic this term and researched many
facts about how the Roman Army was so successful and how they lived. It was found that many
leisure activities resembled those that are enjoyed today, highlighting how advanced the Romans
were with their engineering and inventions.
In addition, cross-curricular links were made with Design Technology as the children created a
mosaic border that would be fit for any Roman villa of the time! Of course, links were also
made with Mathematics and the lines of symmetry were identified in various shapes.
Perpendicular and parallel lines could be highlighted too.
Whilst learning about the Science topic,
Sound, the children experimented making
musical instruments and found out about
pitch, how distance affects volume and how
vibrations can be heard as sounds in our ears.
Last but not least, the children fully embraced
the Poetry topic this term and performed
choral readings with intonation and actions.
They planned and wrote their own raps with
vocabulary that was truly ambitious for their
age group
Year 4
In Year 4G, the children have been studying the water cycle in Geography and how clouds are
formed. They had much fun becoming meteorologists by working out the cloud cover with their
special cloud viewfinders!
This acted as a great cross-curricular activity as the children had to calculate the cloud cover
based on fractions (another maths unit covered in depth this term).
Last term, the class learnt about Hinduism as
part of the ‘Come & See’ scheme. We were
very excited to learn about Judaism this term
when we visited Chatham Memorial
Synagogue. There were many ‘hands-on’
activities as the children used a Yad to read
the Torah Scrolls and wear the required
prayers shawls and headdresses to show
respect. They were extremely observant as
they found many symbols that represented
the Jewish Faith.
