This is how we stay in touch with younewcomers to NZ, migrants, employers, service providers and those interested to help newcomers feel welcome and get settled easily here in Whangarei. Spring is here with warmer temperatures and yes, more rain. But there are plenty of events happening. Later this month we are holding the bi-annual Settlement Network Meeting. This is always a useful gathering for service providers to better understand migrants’ experience and for networking. Don’t miss the Diwali Festival! A great opportunity to enjoy a rich Indian cultural experience with a local flavour. We hope to see you at one of the events listed here. Settlement Network Meeting Thursday 31 October, 9am-1pm @ A’fare Reception Centre, 197 Lower Dent St. Twice a year, Settlement Support invites the Settlement Network (that is you!) to a meeting. These network meetings offer valuable support to migrants and service providers in Whangarei. They come together to discuss relevant issues to new migrants’ settlement and to network effectively. This five day festival involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil. The festival signifies the triumph of light over darkness, justice over injustice, good over evil and intelligence over ignorance. Don’t miss the Whangarei Diwali celebration later this month. Contact: Josie Scott, 021 02238621 [email protected] Haere Mai Settlement Support – Whangarei October 2013 NEW NEW NEW: Inland Revenue Department (IRD) Volunteer Centre is now open Are you starting out in business? www.volunteeringwhangarei.org.nz Whangarei now has its own volunteer centre, located in the Municipal Building at 71 Bank St. next door to the Migrant Centre and Settlement Support office. Volunteering Whangarei recruit and refer volunteers to non-profit and government organisations. The organisations will list volunteering opportunities which will be advertised on-line, at the centre and in local media. The volunteer centre will be a great asset for the non-profit sector and potential volunteers. Organisations will be able to describe specific roles to lessen their current workload, extend their service, start new projects, or get help to run oneoff events. Volunteers will get better insight into the opportunities available; making it more likely they will find something that matches their expectations. For people who want to volunteer but don't know where to start looking, the volunteer centre will make it easy. A central place listing opportunities for youth, new migrants, retired people, the unemployed and anyone who wants to give their time, energy, skills and knowledge, make new friends or have fun, will benefit the community as a whole. More then 100 people came to the Whangarei station to learn about fire safety and see the inside of the fire station and check out some of the equipment.
