27 September 2013
Welcome to the Settlement Support newsletter.
This is how we stay in touch with younewcomers to NZ, migrants, employers, service
providers and those interested to help
newcomers feel welcome and get settled easily
here in Whangarei.
Spring is here with warmer temperatures and
yes, more rain. But there are plenty of events
happening. Later this month we are holding the
bi-annual Settlement Network Meeting. This is
always a useful gathering for service providers
to better understand migrants’ experience and
for networking.
Don’t miss the Diwali Festival! A great
opportunity to enjoy a rich Indian cultural
experience with a local flavour.
We hope to see you at one of the events listed
here.

NEW NEW NEW:
Inland Revenue Department (IRD)
Volunteer Centre
is now open
Are you starting out in business?
www.volunteeringwhangarei.org.nz
Whangarei now has its own volunteer centre,
located in the Municipal Building at 71 Bank St.
next door to the Migrant Centre and Settlement
Support office.
Volunteering
Whangarei
recruit
and
refer
volunteers
to
non-profit
and
government
organisations.
The
organisations
will
list
volunteering opportunities which will be advertised
on-line, at the centre and in local media.
The volunteer centre will be a great asset for the
non-profit
sector
and
potential
volunteers.
Organisations will be able to describe specific roles
to lessen their current workload, extend their
service, start new projects, or get help to run oneoff events. Volunteers will get better insight into
the opportunities available; making it more likely
they will find something that matches their
expectations. For people who want to volunteer but
don't know where to start looking, the volunteer
centre will make it easy.
A central place listing opportunities for youth, new
migrants, retired people, the unemployed and
anyone who wants to give their time, energy, skills
and knowledge, make new friends or have fun, will
benefit the community as a whole.
