This walk takes the
Cloyne
least-gnarly route to
one of North Wales’ wildest
mountain ridges: it’s still hard
work but more than worth it.
On a clear day expect stunning
mountains views, sharp edges,
lonely mountain lakes and a lot
of legwork. This is proper
mountain territory so only
attempt with a fine forecast.

Start
Walk out to L of toilet block,
through gate. Follow wellmaintained path up stone steps
and along path, forking R to Llyn
Idwal. Turn R (north-west) along
lakeshore. Ignore path bearing L
along shoreline towards Devil’s
Kitchen and instead continue
ahead (north-west) on path,
heading uphill towards stone
wall. Path is obvious but gets
very steep. Follow all the way up
round Cwm Clyd to top of Y Garn.
and you should be fine. Follow to
top of Glyder Fawr, then follow
summit ridge eastwards towards
next summit at Glyder Fach. The
path is clear but the rocky terrain
is fairly featureless and it is easy
to become disorientated in fog:
keep steeper northern side of the
summit ridge to your L. Just
before you reach Glyder Fach
summit, look out for the Castell y
Gwynt (Castle of the Wind) rock
formation on your L.

As descent levels out, look for
a steep path bearing down to L
Lundy
and traversing back north-west
towards col between Bristly Ridge
and Tryfan. The top section is
very steep with some rough steps
and can be tricky to find. After
initial steep section path gets a

summit trig point. Once past
summit look out for Cantilever
Stone off to R after 50m. The
climb up can be tricky, but it’s hard
to resist the photo opportunity.
Return to path and continue
bearing eastwards, avoiding
popular route north down Bristly
Ridge to a col beneath Tryfan.
Keep R at fork to find path headed
east, initially weaving through
rocks and out on a downhill slope.

At valley base, cross footpath
that heads south-west and
continue to Llyn y Cwm. Follow
its northern edge around large
rock formations. The path begins
to climb again here twisting in a
southerly direction as the route
becomes steep and full of scree.
As the hill becomes less steep,
the terrain opens up with several
possible routes up and routefinding can be tricky: keep
heading uphill on the wide ridge
