hadthemostperfectfalldayandthemusic
wasfantastic.AspecialthankyoutotheSanta
FeBrewingCompany,theCandymanMusic
storeandthemusicianswhoallvolunteered
theirtimeandtalentstohelpraiseabout
$3500forourartsprograms.Wereallyneed
thesefundstohelpmorestudentsparticipate
inourafterschoolactivities,aswellashelpus
payforthe4thgradeNDIprogram.4thgrade
parents,weareabouthalfwayinourfund
raisingeffortsforthisprogram.Wewillbe
announcingournext4thgradefundraising
effortsoon.
Importantlywiththefirstquarterhalfover,
progressreportswillbesenthomeverysoon
forstudentswhoareofftoaslowstartand
arestrugglinginasubjectorarebehindin
theiracademicskillsorachievement.

forNDIandhavescholarshipsforenrichmentclubsfornextsemester.Thereisstilltimeto

TheTTCSBandsaregettingverymusical!6thgradebandisalreadyworkingonnewmusic.The
5thgradebandisexcitedtobegettingtheirinstrumentsandlearninghowtoplayforthefirst
time.Ifyourchildisinband,parentsshouldreviewthesupplylistandbuytheEssential
Elementsbookwiththegoldstripeacrossthetop.The3rdand4thgradeRecorderEnsembles
arealsounderwayandlearningtheirfirstnewsongs.
NewthisyearistheJazzEnsemble,withtopplayersfromthe6thgradeband,playingvarious
stylesofswing,blues,andbebop.TheDramaWorkshopisworkingonaneworiginalscript
aboutbullyinginschools,whichwillbepresentedattheWinterconcert.
5thgradewillbestudyingguitarthisFall,startingthisweek.Later,inOctober3rdgradewillbe
beginningrecorderstudies.
ThankstoallwhocametoourDayofMusicfortheArtsonSaturdayattheBridge!Itwasa
beautifulSeptemberafternoonandevening.SpecialthankstotheChorusmemberswhojoined
RoundMountaintosing“SanYsidro”!StaytunedformoreinformationonChorus
performances.

Onthisdayin1814,FrancisScottKeypensapoem,whichislater,settomusicandin1931
becomesAmerica’snationalanthem,“TheStar-SpangledBanner.”Thepoem,originallytitled
“TheDefenceofFortMcHenry,”waswrittenafterKeywitnessedtheMarylandfortbeing
bombardedbytheBritishduringtheWarof1812.KeywasinspiredbythesightofaloneU.S.
flagstillflyingoverFortMcHenryatdaybreak,asreflectedinthenow-famouswordsofthe
“Star-SpangledBanner”:“Andtherocket’sredglare,thebombsburstinginair,Gaveproof
throughthenightthatourflagwasstillthere.”
FrancisScottKeywasbornonAugust1,1779,atTerraRubra,hisfamily’sestateinFrederick
County(nowCarrollCounty),Maryland.HebecameasuccessfullawyerinMarylandand
Washington,D.C.,andwaslaterappointedU.S.attorneyfortheDistrictofColumbia.
OnJune18,1812,AmericadeclaredwaronGreatBritainafteraseriesoftradedisagreements.
InAugust1814,BritishtroopsinvadedWashington,D.C.,andburnedtheWhiteHouse,Capitol
BuildingandLibraryofCongress.TheirnexttargetwasBaltimore.
AfteroneofKey’sfriends,Dr.WilliamBeanes,wastakenprisonerbytheBritish,Keywentto
Baltimore,locatedtheshipwhereBeaneswasbeingheldandnegotiatedhisrelease.However,
KeyandBeanesweren’tallowedtoleaveuntilaftertheBritishbombardmentofFortMcHenry.
Keywatchedthebombingcampaignunfoldfromaboardashiplocatedabouteightmilesaway.
Afteraday,theBritishwereunabletodestroythefortandgaveup.Keywasrelievedtoseethe
AmericanflagstillflyingoverFortMcHenryandquicklypennedafewlinesintributetowhathe
hadwitnessed.

TheTurquoiseTrailCharterSchoolstaffwillbeginitsannualTTESpell-a-ThononSeptember1st,
2016.
Thisfunddrivecombinesacademicactivityandfundraisingtomakeitawin-winsituationboth
fortheschoolandchildren.Ourchildrenwillbechallengedtoexpandtheirspellingprowess,
whileatthesametimeraisingfundstobolsterourschool’senrichedacademicofferings.
