LABEL THE MICROSCOPE
Label your microscope

To Find Magnification


Eyepiece: the lens at the top
that you look through. It
magnifies 10X
Objective lenses: Magnify the
specimen
 Scanning
Power = 4X
 Low Power = 10X
 High Power = 40X

So your magnification is 10 x
whatever objective you use
Important Functions




Course Adjustment Knob: Moves the objective up
and down. DO NOT USE THIS IF YOU ARE ON
HIGH POWER
Fine Adjustment Knob: Focuses the specimen
Revolving Nosepiece: allows you to change the
objective lens
Diaphragm or Iris: Adjusts the amount of light.
Microscope Rules
1.
2.
3.
4.
To carry the microscope grasp the microscopes
arm with one hand. Place your other hand under
the base.
Always begin with the scanning power objective
(that would be the smallest one)
Only use the course adjustment knob with the
scanning or low power objective.
When using the course adjustment knob, be careful
not to let the objective touch the slide!!
Steps in using a Microscope
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
With the microscope on the scanning power objective,
place slide on stage and clip down.
Use the course adjustment knob to bring the stage all
the way up (without touching the slide). Look at the
stage when doing this.
Look through the eyepiece and use the course
adjustment knob to bring the stage down until the
specimen comes into focus. You may need to move the
slide to find your specimen.
If necessary, switch to a higher power objective.
To focus on high power, only use the fine focus knob
Collect your lab data…
*All drawings MUST BE IN
COLOR – no exceptions!
(Black or pencil grey does not count as a color!!!)
*High Power may not work well.
If it doesn’t, leave circle blank
until the image is shown on the
board during the review portion
of the lab.
