Parents, We have begun our formal word study program. I will be sending spelling lists home each week so that you can work on the words with your child. I will also include a list of activities that your child can complete for extra practice and for extra credit for word study. This will not be a required homework assignment from me, but I highly encourage your child to complete these exercises for extra practice. Your child will highlight the group that he/she is studying. If you have questions about the group, please let me know. I would like to remind you that some of the words on the spelling test will not be on the list that I send home. We are testing patterns in spelling and sounds, not memorizing a list of words to be recalled each week. Word Hunt Extend the Pattern Make a list of spelling words you find when reading. Put tally marks to show how many times you find each word. Write other words that follow the same spelling and sound patterns as your words. Opposites Picture Perfect Write your words and write an antonym (word that means the opposite) for each one. In Other Words Write your words and write a synonym (word that means about the same thing) for each one. Dictionary Dig Write your words and draw a picture to represent each one. Look up your words in the dictionary and write the definition. Spell and Tell Color Code Sentences Use each word in a sentence that shows you know the meaning of the word. Write each word and write a word that rhymes with it. Write each word 3 times and whisper each letter as you write. Write your words with the vowels (a-e-i-o-u) RED and the consonants BLUE.
