Newsletter No. 12 Email: [email protected] NETBALL Northlands Winter Festival Our U13A Netball girls, coached by Mrs Ford, won the Northlands Winter Festival. From the Deputy Principal's Desk 26 April 2017 LEADERS Executive Committee Congratulations to our Executive Committee: Faith Whittle (Chair Person), Bradley Walker (Vice-chair person), Ashton Welthagen (Secretary) seen here with Mrs Hilliar and Mr Nel. “Please insist your child uses Thinking Maps as part of their studying for tests.” Welcome back to school for another busy term. Our focus is on academics this term with test week happening in June, and pre-test week, the week before. Study guides will be sent home but please check on your child daily to check the written evidence. Copying out whole paragraphs is not good studying, and our teachers will be expecting the children to use Thinking Maps and other techniques to learn for tests. Enclosed in your child’s report envelope was a copy of the eight thinking maps we expect your child to use for learning. Chelsea became a Thinking School last year with our focus on Thinking Maps, which are an enormous help to your child learning and retaining knowledge. I feel privileged to be part of a school, who with forward vision, give our children so many opportunities. Another skill we desperately would like to teach your children is to be independent and organised. We request you to not drop off forgotten items at the front office. Please insist that school bags are packed the night before going to bed, and that lunch is given to your children before being dropped off at school. It is simply impossible to constantly deliver forgotten items to pupils through lack of forward planning. Forgotten tablets may not be dropped off at school (see number three of the tablet policy). I also request you to make arrangements to fetch your children timeously in the afternoons as, on a daily basis, I have children asking to phone their parents because they have not been fetched. We will help in an emergency, but please help your children to organise themselves properly. I am still concerned at the number of children being dropped off late at school in the mornings. It is very unsettling to start the day off late, and it really is not fair on your child to put them in this position. We look forward to participating in tennis, netball, rugby and cultural extra murals this term and require our children to attend every single practice and match. It is important for us to teach our children the importance of commitment and loyalty, and that one member missing from a sports team, choir or band, affects the whole team. We are very proud of our school and the values we teach, so please do not allow your child to miss a practice. On a positive note – congratulations to our U13A Netball girls who won the Northlands Winter Festival on Saturday. Our sincere thanks to Mrs Ford for the awesome job she is doing coaching them. Our U13B and C sides who played the UK touring side on Saturday also enjoyed a wonderful start to the season, as did our rugby boys. Thank you to all the parents who attended Parent Interviews yesterday. We appreciate the opportunity to communicate with you about your child’s progress. STAFF TEA Moms Who Care Through Prayer A huge thank you to our moms for spoiling the staff with a beautiful tea at the end of Term 1. It is greatly appreciated. SPORTS NEWS Dear Parents Welcome back after what I hope was a restful holiday with your children. I am sure that everyone would have enjoyed the much needed rest and quality time with your families. This week we begin our netball and rugby fixtures with matches against Umhlali. Teams for these codes have been selected but as was the case with cricket and action netball and which is our policy at Chelsea, these teams are subject to change dependent on performance and on the rate at which individual pupils develop. Our aim at Chelsea is always to give every signal pupil who chooses to play a particular code of sport, equal opportunity to progress. Having said that one must remember that netball in particular and rugby to a certain extent is position specific. The sports department wishes all our pupils the very best of luck with their chosen codes of sport this term and hopes that they derive lots of enjoyment, make new friends, meet their personal sports goals for this term and learn and develop new skills. We will do everything in our power to help them achieve these goals. Reminder to the parents whose children have chosen soccer for this term: The soccer payment was due on Friday 21 April, unfortunately we will have to exclude pupils from practice until this payment has been made. RUGBY Winterford School Visiting From the UK U13B and U13A rugby teams who played against Winterford School from Wimbledon in the U.K over the weekend. OLIVER'S TRAVEL Oliver Travelling all Over Oliver was a very busy little owl these past few weeks. A few of the places he visited were: Orange River, the Big Hole in Kimberley, Ndaka Safari Lodge, Eastern Cape, cruising on the MSC Sinfonia to the Portuguese Islands, Hermanus, Adelaide (Australia) and Gold Reef City. GRADE 4 Winning class of the Bean Competition Mrs Walker's class won the Bean Growing Competition with their bean growing the tallest. Congratulations! FULL STOP The Touchstone When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book and so a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for a few coppers. The book wasn’t very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum on which was written the secret of the Touchstone! The touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was that the real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold. So the old man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold – throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months. One day, however, about mid-afternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realised what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along he still threw it away. So it is with opportunity. Unless we are vigilant, it’s easy to fail to recognise an opportunity when it is in hand and it’s just as easy to throw it away.
