LOGO LOCK-UP
A logo lockup refers to the formalized position/relationship of the brand’s logo (symbol) and
its wordmark (logotype). The logo can be locked–up in two different ways. Horizontally and
vertically. The Maricopa Community Colleges’ logo is a trademarked logo and cannot be altered
or recreated in any way.

LOGO ELEMENTS
The -31º “M” angle will be
used to construct consistent
compositions and create a
dynamic feeling of movement
throughout Maricopa’s
advertising.
The tracking, or letter-spacing in the word
Maricopa is set to 25 thousandths of an em

Logomark
A logomark is an identifying mark or symbol that doesn’t
contain the business name. Think of the Nike ‘swoosh’, Shell,
Mercedes or Adidas.
Wordmark (logotype)
The wordmark or logotype is the typeface used in
conjunction with the logomark. The primary typeface for
MCCCD’s logo is Avenir Black in all capitals. Avenir Black
was selected for the vertical stem of the “M” as well as the
perfect ellipse of the “O’s” counter.
5
The tracking in Community College
is set to 61 thousandths of an em
A
The vertical of the “M’s” stem is
representative of strength and does
not compete with the angle of the
logomark’s “M”.
B
The counter of the “O” in Avenir
Black creates repetition in shape by
mimicking the circle in the logomark.

Avenir Black is the typeface used for the District’s
name – Maricopa, as well as the names of the
colleges. Avenir Roman is also used for campus
locations and when partnering with another
MCCCD college. The Avenir typefaces are only
to be used in all capital letters. Tracking for
Avenir should be set to 0 for college names and
should be set at 61 (thousandths of an em) for
programs, departments and divisions. Should
Avenir not be available, the substitute font for
Avenir Black is Arial Bold and for Avenir Roman is
Arial Regular.
The typeface used for body copy and to assist
in program, department, division and event
designations is Open Sans Regular and Light.
Open Sans is used for sentence and title case
situations. Tracking for Open Sans should be set
to zero. Open Sans is a downloadable font from
Google and needs no substitute.
There is also a serif font, Crimson text, to be used
for offical certificates, graduations and other
items that require a more sophicitated typeface.

Clear Space
The area that surrounds the logo is as important
as the logo itself. The minimum area of one
“M”, known as “clear space,” provides breathing
room to the logo and eliminates visual clutter
(text, graphic elements or other logos) that can
compete with logo legibility – thereby diminishing
the effectiveness of the logo.

GUIDELINES FOR USING THE LOGO
Using the logmark without the wordmark
Use only approved electronic versions of the logo. The
logo must not be used altered in proportion or printed in
color combinations other than those outlined in this guide.
Avoid using design features such as screening, changing the
proportion of the logo, rotating or utilizing the logo as part
of a pattern or larger image.
Generally, the circular identifier should be used with the
wordmark. However, there are some cases when it is
acceptable, for example, when displaying all the circular
identifiers together along with the Maricopa logo, or as an
extra design element that appears on the same piece as the
entire logo. (As on the back of the business card)
Size guidelines
If you are unsure if your design meets graphic standards,
ask the Marketing department.
To ensure legibility, the height of the logo should never be
smaller than 3/4-inch for the vertical logo and 1 1/2 inches
wide for the horizontal logo. At least one inch height for the
vertical is recommended for most publications.

Logo/Brand Colors
The official MCCCD colors are Pantone Matching System (PMS) grey and 289 blue. A companion color palette
has been developed to complement the official MCCCD colors. If desired, the companion colors identified
below can be used in addition to the official blue and grey, however not as a replacement for them. The
companion color palette can be used singly or in combinations to add choice and variety to designs, although
using more than two companion colors in designs is not recommended.
