Treatment Centre Advice for patients who have been given a Turner Warwick Dilator A Turner Warwick Dilator is used to prevent a stricture occurring after you have had penile surgery. A stricture is a narrowing of the urethra (the canal through which urine is passed from the bladder). You will be instructed and shown how to use the dilator before you are discharged. You will also be told how often to use the dilator. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after using the dilator. It is also important to wash around the area where the dilator is going to be inserted. The dilator is a short metal rod which is tapered at both ends, one end being slimmer than the other. You will be given a tube of KY Jelly with your dilator. Begin with the smaller end of the dilator, cover the rod with the KY Jelly and gently insert to a comfortable level in the penis. This is usually half an inch to begin with. Eventually, you can insert the rod approximately two inches. When this can be done comfortably, you can begin this same procedure with the thicker end of the rod. You will be told at you next outpatient appointment how long you should continue doing this procedure. After use, wash the dilator in hot soapy water so that the dilator is clean for next time. Please remember to bring back the dilator with you at your next urology outpatient appointment.
