The lady with the lamp

The Lady with the Lamp
Florence’s early life
Florence Nightingale was born it Italy in 1820 and grew up in a rich
family in England. Her father was called William and he educated
her at home. Some people called her a book worm because she
always had her head in a book. She wanted to be a nurse when
she grew up because she wanted to help people.
Going to be a nurse
Florence went to Germany to train a group of nurses. In November
1854 they went to a Scutari hospital in The Crimea to help soldiers
who were hurt. Turkey and Russia were fighting.
Going to the Crimean War
When she got there she was disgusted at how dirty and smelly the
hospital was. Florence got her nurses to work. They scrubbed and
opened the windows. There were soldiers lying on the floor and
maggots everywhere but by the time Florence had finished it was a
completely different place. Then she could focus on the soldiers.
First she tended to their wounds then Florence ordered some
beds. When the soldiers were better they were able to go home.
When the war ended she stayed until every single soldier was well.
She was called the lady with the lamp because she walked around
the hospital at night with a lamp.
Going home
When she got home she was famous. She wrote a book and
designed a new nursing hospital in London. Queen Victoria gave
her a red cross for her work. She died in 1910. We remember her
because she was famous because she made the hospitals clean.

got there! It was hell on earth. There she found soldiers lying on
the floor in pools of blood. Maggots were crawling all over the
floor. The hospital was filthy. Florence knew what had to be
done. She told her nurses to get cleaning the hospital
immediately. First they swept the floor. Florence would not let
