Q: What is K.I.D.S.?
•K.I.D.S. is a four-hour parent education seminar designed to assist parents who are involved with the courts regarding
custody and visitation issues. K.I.D.S. is not therapy.
Q: Why do I have to go to K.I.D.S.?
•All parties involved in any court petition regarding custody and/or visitation for a child are referred to K.I.D.S. This
referral is in response to a Family Education Law.
•Parents do not need a court order to attend the seminar. It is open to anyone dealing with issues of custody and
visitation.
Q: Do I have to come to the same seminar as my children’s mother/father?
•NO. When you call to register, you will be asked to provide the name of your co-parent (children’s mother/father).
Providing this information is necessary and assists us in ensuring that co-parents are not scheduled in the same class.
Q: What am I going to get out of K.I.D.S.?
K.I.D.S. has three primary goals:
•To raise parents awareness of the effects of parental conflict on children & typical responses to this conflict.
•To provide information about supporting children, particularly during transitions;
•To provide strategies that may help ease communication with the co-parent.
In addition to these goals, you will have the opportunity to meet & be supported by other parents who are dealing with
custody & visitation issues.
Q: How much does this seminar cost?
•K.I.D.S. does have a fee of $45.00 per person. This fee will be collected prior to registration for the class. You may pay
with cash in person (exact change please), or you can mail a check. Please make checks payable to Goochland
Powhatan Community Services. A receipt will be provided.
Q. Can I bring my children?
•Unfortunately, childcare is not available at this time. Due to the sensitive nature of material discussed in K.I.D.S.,
children are not able to attend with their parents, regardless of age. Please arrange for appropriate childcare for your
children.
