A dream into reality, you hear that expression very often, don’t you? Nonetheless, it’s very rare to actually SEE that dream, that vision, become a vivid, undeniable reality. And, it’s also very rare to see it happen in such a brief period of time. Dubai has transformed a plain desert into a blooming paradise in the blink of an eye. Today, Al Mawakeb students showed their appreciation and support “ A jewel in the Middle East, shining at its best, Dubai will always lead the rest, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, a visionary by himself leads the way for all of us. EXPO 2020 will always be ours, We have a dream that will take us far, All of us are a team, With us Dubai will shine like a radiant beam, Like a phoenix it will rise, To show the world its might and pride, Never compromising to lead or grow, We are here for the world to know. “ through various activities. The vision and dream of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad transmitted their way into the hearts and minds of Al Mawakeb girls. First off, the junior girls prepared a fun activity for grades 5 to 7 to challenge their general geographical knowledge of the UAE. Students worked in groups and enjoyed it to the maximum, they were also eager to be supporting Dubai in this mega event. Moreover, they arranged activity stands with a variety of amusing games such as building with blocks, coloring the flag, locating emirates on a map and more for grade 5-6 girls to enjoy. The fun doesn’t end here! By the end of the day, the juniors held a presentation titled “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” to spread awareness and create a buzz about Expo 2020 to grades 9-10. They presented speeches about Expo 2020, its definition, its importance and its advantages for example; free wifi, Dubailand, an expansion for Dubai Mall, underwater hotels and much more. Also, they discussed the Dubai metro, it held over 200 million passengers. Additionally, they made a video displaying the past-present evolution of Dubai, and how a Maria Atassi Grade 5, Al Mawakeb - Al Garhoud beautiful city was created out of a desert. Although a lot of attention was given to Expo 2020, the UAE national day was not forgotten. An integration of both Expo 2020 and prenational day was celebrated festively in the big hall. All students were invited to learn more about the Emirati heritage and traditions. Local students did a splendid job by conveying their devotion and dedication to their country through planning some of the activities. It is said that Da Vinci could envision his painting before starting to draw, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum dreamed Dubai, and frankly he’s painted quite a picture. With every grain of sand, every ounce of hope, every moment of hard work and perseverance, the miracle city, the city of enormity, the city of lights, Dubai was built. Dubai is a prosperous city that has flourished more than any city ever has in 10 years or less. Today, Dubai was seen through Al Mawakeb students’ eyes, it was appreciated immensely through youth. So vote for Dubai, because it is truly worthy of hosting such a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious event. Tania Abdulbaki, Grade 10, Al Mawakeb - Al Garhoud THE UAE IN WORLD EXPOS The UAE has a long history with World Expo stretching back four decades to Abu Dhabi’s participation in the 1970 Expo in Osaka, Japan. Today, the relationship continues, with the UAE currently taking part at Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea. The Expo theme, “The Living Ocean and Coast”, resonates deeply with the UAE, which has a proud seafaring history. The UAE Pavilion in Yeosu reflects the nation’s commitment to the responsible development and protection of its coastline and marine habitat. Be part of Expo 2020 Dubai, UAE Hello 2020 Connecting Minds, Creating the Future transforming lives since 1979... “Why is it that you say, ‘I hope we win Expo 2020’ if you are not a UAE citizen yourself?” I stared in shock as a relative, who had been visiting my family and I, made that claim. I’ve resided in Dubai for the past 8 years, but it has become more of a home to me than my own country ever was. As a child, I was uprooted from my hometown and planted into prosperous Dubai sands. Prosperous indeed, these typically infertile sands changed the rules of nature and allowed concrete jungles to grow, flourish and thrive in every direction possible. Citizens of Dubai, a middle-eastern Amazon of diversity, grow and twine together like the branches of an evergreen tree. From every city of the world, they come here to plant their skills, ideas and businesses, all of which shoot nowhere but up. Their dreams, at first just little spurs, bloom into the most striking of realities. A thing of legends, this city strives to make the impossible possible for each and every person who sets foot on its magical land. Yet with all the growth in the world, Dubai has managed to stay true to its roots. Morals and ethics govern this city, under a ruler whose thumbs could not be greener. This booming hub of prosperity, pride and potential is predestined to win the Expo 2020. As an individual, a school, and a nation, and by the spirit of the union, we wholeheartedly support Dubai for the bid. Or better yet what does Dubai winning the bid for the World Expo 2020 mean to you as a resident? Well, a lot actually. 1. You can get a new job- It's estimated a huge 277,000 new jobs could be created in the region, including 111,000 in the hotel and restaurant sectors. Start getting your CV ready! 2. There'll be more brunches- It's expected there'll be more hotels built to cope with the 25 million visitors expected. That means more luxury places to hang out for us residents! And more brunches! 3. You'll have more clothes"Retail is going to grow like crazy," according to David Macadam, CEO and Vice Chairman at Middle East Council of Shopping Centers. Shop 'till you drop! 4. You'll be able to try the latest craze first- Dubai could be home to some life-changing inventions. The Eiffel Tower, the telephone, ice cream and Heinz Tomato Ketchup were all created for previous Expos! What could be invented here? The mind boggles. But we'll be the first to try it. 5. Rents might cause you drama- The big question. Will rents be pushed up? We fear they could. If your landlord does try to get more cash, visit www.dubailand.gov.ae and click on the rent calculator. It'll tell you what you should be paying, and if your landlord doesn't agree, you can complain to Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA). However property experts CRBE have put a positive spin on things. They've said possibility of winning the bid has already been factored into Dubai's rising property prices. A construction boom, likely to be spurred by the event, will mean there'll be more to go around too. We really hope landlords won't try to take advantage. 6. There'll be shorter taxi queues and a better airportThe Dubai Metro will get a new purple line extending to the Expo site, while there'll also be a cable car and bus services to get there. Plus the new Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central (near Jebel Ali and way cheaper in a taxi than Dubai International) will surpass London Heathrow as the biggest in the world, with 160 million passengers per year. The Dubai Tram will also be finished, making it easier for folks in the Marina to get to work. No more crazy taxi rides! 7. New university- Once finished, the Expo site will be transformed into a university and research center, and a city can never have too many learning centers. 8. More places to hang outAll the projects which were begun but never completed will be given a kick-start by the Expo. We're hoping that'll include things like The World Islands so we can go visit, and that amazing Palazzo Versace Hotel near Dubai Festival City. The world's biggest mall, that will be bigger than The Dubai Mall, will also be built. 9. A better environmentThe city will become more environmentally friendly, as Dubai Expo 2020 has a target to produce 50% of the Expo’s energy requirements on site. We hope it'll set a green example for the rest of the city and get us all recycling, so we can feel less guilty about harming the environment. THE ICE CREAM CONE - 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair The ice cream cone was once a type of waffle rolled by hand into a conical shape. It made its debut at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis as the first edible, walk-away ice cream container. It proved so popular with the crowds that an industrial ice cream cone rolling machine was developed soon afterwards. THE MOBILE PHONE - 1970 Osaka World’s Fair It’s hard to imagine life without mobile phones, but not so long ago, the only telephones that existed had to be plugged into a socket. Yet when the first mobiles were shown at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, a lunar rock brought back from the Apollo moon missions got far more attention.
