Graphic Organizer Notes
 You
will be filling out the graphic organizer
with the following slides.
 When
you are done, you will attach it to the
right hand side of your notebook
+
The Six Kingdoms
  Scientists
categorize organisms into 6 kingdoms:
Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi,
Plantae, Animalia
  Organisms
are classified based on characteristics
such as: cell type, cell number, how it reproduces,
its mode of nutrition, and other factors.
To which kingdom to humans belong?
+
Archaebacteria
  Cell
  #
type: prokaryotic cells
of cells: all unicellular
  Cell Wall: present
  Nutrition: some
autotrophs, some heterotrophs
  Reproduction: all
  Movement: most
  Other: some
asexual
do not move, some have flagella
can live in extreme
conditions (heat, cold, acid)
+
Eubacteria

Cell type: prokaryotic cells

Number of cells: all unicellular

Cell Wall: present

Mode of nutrition: some autotrophs, some heterotrophs

Reproduction: asexual

Movement: some have flagella, some float

Other: examples include strep or E. coli
+
Protista

Cell type: eukaryotic cells

Number of cells: most unicellular

Cell Wall: some have cell walls made of cellulose

Mode of nutrition: autotrophs and heterotrophs

Reproduction: mostly asexual

Movement: cillia, flagella, pseudopoda

Other:
+
Fungi

Cell type: eukaryotic cells

Number of cells: most multicellular

Cell Wall: present, made of chitin

Mode of nutrition: heterotroph, decomposers

Reproduction: mostly asexual, some sexual

Movement: most don’t move

Other:
+
Plantae

Cell type: eukaryotic cells

Number of cells:multicellular

Cell Wall: present

Mode of nutrition: autotrophs

Reproduction: most do not move

Movement: some asexual (budding, spores)/ some sexual
(flowers)

Other:
+
Animalia

Cell type: eukaryotic cells

Number of cells:multicellular

Cell Wall: none

Mode of nutrition: heterotrophs

Reproduction: mostly sexual

Movement: various means of movement


White Board Activity

You will see pictures and characteristics of organisms on the
following slide.

Write down the organisms or the characteristic that the
organism has on your white board and hold it up!
+
Sea Anemone
This organism is
multicellular and
eukaryotic. It’s
cells do not have a
cell wall. It is
heterotrophic,
filtering its food
from the ocean
water. They are
asexual and
reproduce by
binary fission.
+
Tersicoccus phoenicis
This bacteria was just
recently found in two of
NASA’s “clean rooms”. It is
resistant to known cleaning
products. It is a eubacteria.
What cell
type do
these
organisms
posses?
+
Green Algae
This unicellular organism is an
autotroph. It has a cell wall and floats
in water. Green algae can reproduce
sexually and asexually.
What kingdom
does this
organism belong
to?
+
The Giant Montane Pitcher plant
The Giant Montane
Pitcher plant is a
multicellular
eukaryotic
organism. It’s cells
are surrounded by
cell walls made of
cellulose. It is
autotrophic but it
also gets extra
nutrients from
shrew poop that
gets excreted in
the pitcher.
What kingdom does this organism
belong to?
+
Yeast
This organism is a unicellular heterotroph. It
has a cell wall made of chitin. It reproduces
asexually and is used in breads to make them
rise.
To what
kingdom does
this organism
belong?
+
Staphylococcus aureus (causes
staph infection)
This organism is a single-celled
prokaryote. It has a cell wall.
Staph is a heterotroph eats flesh.
To what kingdom
does this organism
belong?
+
Amoeba
This organism is a
unicellular
heterotroph. It does
not have a cell wall
but does have a
pseudopod that allows
it to move. It is
classified as a protist.
What cell type
does this
organism
have?
+
Earthworm
This organism is
classified in the
Animalia kingdom.
Does it have
cells that are
surrounded
by a cell
wall?
+
Thermophiles
This organism is a
unicellular prokaryote. It
has a cell wall. This
particular organism is a
chemo-autotroph that
makes its food and gets
energy from sulfur. They
can only survive in
extremely hot
temperatures between
(80-105 degrees).
To which kingdom
does this organism
belong?
+
Stinkhorn Mushroom
This particular type of
mushroom is a heterotrophic
decomposer that creates a foulsmelling slime. It is a
multicellular organism.
What cell type
does this
organism have?
+
Card Sort

Sort the cards given into the six kingdoms: Archaebacteria,
Eubacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia

When you are finished raised your hand for the teacher to
check.
+
Post-It Note Word Wall
  There
  You
are words written around the room.
have two post-it notes
  Write
your name on the back of each.
  Write
down the definition, description, or
characteristic of two different words around the
room.
  When
word
you are finished post them to the correct
+
Rebel Race
 Rebel
race over items on your test
+
Exit Slip

Finish the exit slip and turn it into the designated area.
