Zollverein Design School
Address
Gelsenkirchener Straße 209
45309 Essen
Germany

.
As the first new building on the grounds of the Zollverein World
Heritage site, the Zollverein School will provide ground-breaking
impetus for the future transformation of the former industrial
complex into a design location with international reach. The
building will also enhance the urban planning value of the
surrounding districts in the northern part of Essen and the Ruhr.
The sharp-edged bright, light grey 34 high cube looks both
powerful and lightweight at the same time. The design is
characterized by extreme purism. The formal closed appearance
of the over-sized cube is broken up by the irregular arrangement
of windows. It comprises four storeys (four levels and a rooftop
garden) of different ceiling heights. There are few supporting
structures and all of the building technology is hidden in the
walls and ceilings. As a Far Eastern counterpart to the austere
Bauhaus style, the building radiates an almost poetic power.

.
After years of cleaning up the buildings, in 2001 the plan started
to refurbish and reuse the coal washing plant, and create a
special programme for the future Ruhr Museum. Now it houses
the Zollverein visitor centre. The entrance presented a particular
challenge because there was no main entrance during the period
in which the pit was in operation, and it had to do justice to the
new usage. The architects designed a new gangway in the open
air in front of the building, supported solely by a single v-shaped
pillar. With 24.3 m height it’s it the highest open-air moving
staircase in Germany. The gangway leads visitors from the plaza
to the visitor centre in the foyer at the 24-m level. From here, on
their way into the exhibition, guests pass the impressive
machinery with screening drums, dosing wagons and jigging
sieves, water basins and conveyor belts, to the imposing bunker
which was once used for storing raw coal -now opened up and
serves as a stairway to the levels below.

.
The second Town Hall in The Hague, the municipality offices on
the Leyweg, was designed by architect Rudy Uytenhaak. The
building is a signal for the surroundings and a catalyst for the
modernisation of the urban district. There is a blend of civil
service provision, a library and homes around the office building.
Inventive use of both new and 'proven' building techniques
generated a result with a highly expressive form, which is
spatially surprising, flexible, functional and durable.

ROC Mondriaan Laak II
Address
Leeghwaterplein 72
2521 DB Den Haag
Netherlands
.
The new building is situated on a narrow plot, perched between
the busy railway lines at The Hague HS Station and the
Waldorpstraat. The position, close to the public transport node is
an excellent strategic choice: the school campus that is formed
here in conjunction with The Hague University of Applied
Sciences, the student and entry level housing and the resulting
social life, is directly connected to all forms of (public) transport
and is situated in the middle of the city. The building forms a
powerful and colourful (a la Mondriaan) completion of the
Leeghwaterplein. Seen from the train, it serves as a calling card
for ROC Mondriaan. The building has a grid shaped concrete
façade decorated in the ROC colours. The effect in combination
with the windows results in a strong whole. An arcade follows the
pedestrian route from the train station to the housing complexes
and Megastores shopping mall. Large glass areas along the arcade
provide a glimpse into the school.

Expansion and Renovation of the
Canadian Embassy
Address
Sophialaan 7
2514 JP Den Haag
Netherlands
.
The Canadian Embassy in The Hague has been substantially
renovated and expanded. The existing building from 1955 is
located in The Hague in the midst of historic construction. This
neighborhood is characterized by 19th century white villas in the
Palladian style. The Canadian Embassy engages with the villas of
Palladio in its architecture. On the street side the building is
executed in natural stone, unlike the 19th century plastered
neighboring buildings. The two-layered volume, coated with
French limestone, rests upon a plinth of granite. This plinth, the
large floor height and the coating with granite and limestone are
repeated in the new building as an autonomous volume. The
offices in the new building feature double height glass facades.
Behind the large parts of the glass is a white screen that works as
patterned curtains and and blinds. The existing and the new
building are connected by two corridors, which enclose a patio.
