(Spring 1) Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers
It feels a long time ago already, but we
hope that you enjoyed a lovely Christmas!
The Yr 3 staff team are very grateful for all
the cards and presents that we received.
New Project: Ruthless Romans
Lead subjects: History (Iron Age Settlers &
Roman invaders) & Literacy (Quest
myths)
Core value: Aspiration
Learning attributes: resilience and
independence
We begin by studying the Iron Age Settlers
and then look at the reasons for and the
consequences of the Roman invasion. We
will become History detectives and find
clues that will show us what the past was
like.
Our brilliant beginning involved an
archaeological trip to Hengistbury Head to
find real Iron Age pottery and build our
own round houses. During the half-term
we will go onto put Queen Boudicca on
trial, make a mosaic and perform a Roman
inspired dance.
For our Fantastic Finale we will pretend to
join the Roman army for the day, under
the direction of Simon Stone.
Please get involved by going for walks to
ancient Iron-Age hill forts like Badbury
Rings or Maiden Castle.
Yr 3 NEWSLETTER - SPRING TERM – 1st
HALF
Many pupils have enjoyed visits to the
Roman Baths in Bath, the Roman Palace at
Fishbourne (they often have good events
on at half-term) or the Dorchester town
house. Do take photos as we will be
setting a short research task based on a
British Roman/Celt building towards the
end of this half-term.
During Literacy lessons we are studying
some famous Roman & Greek myths e.g.
Theseus and the Minotaur and the Twelve
Labours of Heracles (or Hercules as the
Romans called him). The Literacy skills will
involve sequencing our stories, using
speech punctuation and adding powerful
descriptive detail.

Maths
We are very focused on multiplying and
dividing for our weekly Times Table
challenge. Remember x2,3,4,5,6 and 10
are the focus tables for the majority of Y3
pupils. Fridays have been set aside as a
time for the children to develop their
mental maths target, such as doubling,
halving and multiplying by 100 etc. We
are planning that this will increase the
confidence and precision of their
arithmetic. By the end of the term
children should also have developed a
‘paper and pencil’ strategy that will enable
them to use any of the 4 number
operations. Other units include looking at
fractions, capacity and rounding.
Spellings
Following the parent workshop last term,
instead of a weekly test on a Friday we will
now be doing daily ‘whiteboard’ testing.
We will continue to have a spelling
workshop most weeks (currently Monday
afternoon), where 5 words be given for
our different groups.
We hope you are looking forward to this
exciting term as much as we are!
