Acadiana is thrilled to introduce a new cultural
exhibit: EGYPT At A Glance, scheduled to open in August. The exhibit offers an
opportunity to explore ancient Egypt through hands-on activities such as role-playing,
art experiences, games, and basic discoveries about the ancient Egyptians.
Children will be introduced to hieroglyphics, ornamental clothing, Egyptian fun facts,
and who were some of the who’s who in ancient Egypt.

about
“Whisper Dish
es”!
Local CMA supporter Don Begneaud (of Begneaud’s Manufacturing) first discovered
“whisper dishes” in the early 1990’s in Chicago and outside Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
He was intrigued and inspired...and thought that whisper dishes would make a great
addition to the CMA and he was right! He collected several old satellite dishes and got
to work, experimenting and building until he perfected the set-up.
Mr. Begneaud’s generous donation of “Whisper Dishes” are a source of wonder and
awe for all who try it. It’s easy...you step in back of one dish and have a partner stand in
front of the other whisper dish. Whisper something, you will be ale to talk into the dish
in hushed tones, and be able to hear one another. All without electricity!
Whisper dishes are also called “conversation curves”. They are parabolas are
made of metal. When sound wave hit a parabola, sound is reflected back in a straight
line. (That’s why theaters are designed with a parabola as a backdrop, the acoustics are
better for the audience). When you set up two parabolas facing one another, you create
an ellipse and sound waves can travel back and forth easily.
Prior to World War II and the invention of radar, acoustic mirrors (or whisper dishes) were built as early warning
devices around the coasts of Great Britain, with the aim of detecting airborne invasions. The most famous of these devices
still stands at Denge on the Dungeness peninsula. Microphones placed at the foci of the reflectors enables a listener to
detect the sound of aircraft far out over the English Channel. In addition to being able to detect range over 20 miles, on a
good day they could also detect direction.
Though the acoustic mirror technique of detection has been long replaced by
radar, the experimentation is still ongoing. In 1974, using the ultimate “Whisper Dish”
the 1000 meter radio dish air Arecibo, Puerto Rico, people working for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence sent a “whisper” into space. The target was the great globular
star clusters in the constellation Hercules, a distance of 25,000 light years from the
earth. The Arecibo dish can also be used to receive whispers from space, though
none have been received.
Visit the Children’s Museum of Acadiana today and experience the wonder of “whisper dishes” for yourself!
Many thinks to Don Begneaud of Begneaud Manufacturing!
