We continue to receive numerous positive comments regarding the quality of our plants & breeding, from our ever-increasing customer base. This confirms to us that we have a growing group of very happy Aussie Native Orchid lovers. Our Website www.duno.com.au Results Tab, show details for 2007. Briefly. Wetlands Spring Show at Sandgate, OPEN SHOW chosen as Champion Australian Native Orchid of the Show as well as Champion Australian Native Species Other than Dendrobium our Dockrillia linguiformis ‘Tumbi’ 74 raceme carrying over 2,100 pristine white flowers, this plant was subsequently judged Champion for the Bill Murdoch Trophy 2007, still in the Murdoch arena saw Dock. striolata ‘Ruffles’ AD/AM/ANOS-AOC received another Gold certificate and Sarc. hartmannii ‘Dopey’ a Bronze. Whilst the Hybrid department D. Elegant Heart ‘Windy’ was Champion Australian Native Hybrid, at the Wetlands, and one of the five Silver Ira Butler Trophies recipients. The Ira Butler Certificate nominations saw Sarc. Heidi ‘Ho! - Albie’, at Central Coast Sarc. Show was the recipient of the inaugural ‘Albie Sherwood Memorial Trophy’ a very pleasing result for us. Our Congratulations to Mr. Phil Grech (DUNO customer) in winning the Gold Ira Butler ’07 with Den. Jayden ‘Goodie’. Whilst on the Ira Butler, a further seven received Silver Trophies or Certificates that are directly attributed to D U N O breeding. The Hermon Slade Hybrid Judging saw our good friend Neville (alias Nifty) Lee received the trophy with his Dock. Tweetas. D U N O also received two of the four certificates. Our friend from New Jersey, Dick Doran who has had numerous successes with D U N O Dendrobium and Sarcochilus Hybrids/Species advised that Den. Warragul ‘Hot Lips’ was awarded AM /AOS and Den. Cheeky HCC /AOS at recent Shows on the East Coast of America. Dick grows in a glass House and in winter has been known to shovel snow from little to lots from the door to get to his plants. Hasn’t been an easy year for the seedlings/ plants with the dramatic weather changes we’ve experienced during 2007. The lack of rain, then the deluges hasn’t been any help but we did manage to do what we did with what was available and were rewarded with those results, which confirms that, quality does count. We hope that the new parents & excellent crosses we are offering this year, are to your liking, & look forward to your custom. Note that as well divisions of our Dockrillia’s, we’ve added divisions, all be it not large, of some of our show/ breeding Speciosums, Tropicools, kingianums & ‘Colds’, in limited quantities, so be early in placing your orders. Remember don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments regarding the catalogue, the Website or your plants. Due to the ever-increasing cost of producing & sending our “Colour” Catalogues to you, this will be our final colour effort. Those of you who have enjoyed looking at the pictures of our parent plants, Trophy winners, first flowered seedlings etc., they will be made available on Website www.duno.com.au , and at Shows. In 2009 the catalogue will be in Black & White and can inform you that we hope to have new & exciting Dockrillia Hybrids for you in 2009 and into 2010, whilst reducing other areas of production. We hope our vivid descriptions will help you decide. My personal health in 2007 (Brian) has played havoc with continued work in the laboratory, thus we have had no choice but to scale down our hybridizing program & limit flask work. Whilst being a Vietnam veteran, I might say that, age does weary you, especially in the fine motor areas, that guy Arthur Ritus, (both hands), has raised his ugly head. We will endeavor to present to you the best we can produce with our quality awarded parents & others, and hope to maintain our position in the Aussie Native Hybrids & Species field that you have been accustomed, and continue to indulge in that quality. You will note we have no flasks available as such for this apologize, hopefully you will understand. What flasks that MAY become available will be offered at Events & Shows in which we attend. Happy Growing in 2008, Phena & Brian FREIGHT CHARGES - We use Australia Post & can deliver to your door up to 75 seedlings (5 kg) for $16.50 except Western Australia and Tasmania, where documentation charges have to be added. Stick the ‘Moon’ into the equation; result should be a show bench special. 50mm TUBES PLUS 2 COMPOTS @ $30.00 EACH *D. spec. curv. ‘MISTY MOUNTAIN’ HCC/AOC X SELF One of the relatively new kids. Shouldn’t take 15 years to flower, they are growing well 50mm TUBES PLUS 3 COMPOTS @ $30.00 EACH D. kingianum ‘WHITE ICE’ X kingianum ‘BROWN’S WHITE’ As above with ‘White Ice’, & I think this one of the few white line breeding that has been done. D. spec. curv. ‘BLEW MOON’ X SELF ‘Blew’ without question one of the best curvicaule’s, from the same area as ‘The Moon’ FCC/AOC was collected. When they both flower at their best it is difficult to judge, which is better, trouble is, they don’t seem to want to do it at the same time. Could be brothers/sisters. Worth serious consideration50mm TUBES & 80mm POTS @ $12.00 EACH *D. kingianum ‘BLACK ALLEY’ X kingianum ‘CHEW BACCA’ Could be similar to X2190, (’05 Cat.) only that ‘Black Alley’ is a slightly bigger flower, and deeper in colour. Enjoy the journey, we will. 50mm TUBES 2392 S. AWESOME ‘TOO’ X x JAZZ ‘TUMBI’ RUTHERFORD SUNSPOT NOTES WE ACCEPT VISA, MASTERCARD, CHEQUES (CHECKS), MONEY ORDERS & EVEN CASH 12 DEAR CUSTOMER We have several types of plants on offer & would like to tell you a little about them. Our culture notes are offered as a guide only, it works for us, so please be careful to try our ideas on an unimportant plant first and see if it suits your conditions! Our Tropicool’s™ have a tropical species in their background, in most cases Den. bigibbum, a plant which is used behind many of the worlds cut flower orchids. It lasts longer than most Dendrobium species & produces such flamboyant flowers. As Den. bigibbum flowers in autumn, & most other commonly used species in our hybrids flower in spring. Tropicool’s usually flower any time between May & September, with our peak at the end of July, early August. As a result, this type of hybrid has filled in the off-season with wonderful flowers, & will tolerate as much cold as most other native Dendrobiums. The trick is to keep them DRY in cold weather. The higher the bigibbum content the colder the DRIER! In cold weather, when the bulbs start to wrinkle give them a good drink in the morning, avoiding the coldest days. If the bulbs are not wrinkling, they are not thirsty! Pot up into 80mm pots as soon as they are big enough. DO NOT over pot! Air movement is important, we hang our best (large plants, not seedlings). If you follow these guidelines you should grow them as well as your other natives. Other Dendrobiums and Sarcochilus;- As with the Tropicool’s™ above, these should not be over watered. If you watch the bulbs you will see they generally wrinkle before the Tropicool’s™ so can tolerate more water, but don’t over do it. Be guided by the plant bulbs! Sarcochilus on the other hand don’t have pseudo bulbs, so they have to be treated a little differently, in that in summer you can’t afford to let them dry out as they don’t have any water reserves, other than in their leaves. Water when they need it. Light doesn’t have to be as bright as for Dendrobiums to grow them successfully, feed and treat them the same as ordinary Dendrobiums, except for the watering. In winter cut back as you do with Tropicools for watering. General;- Avoid high Nitrogen fertiliser like the plague - it leads to soft, fungi prone growth and few flowers. We use a high potassium food with an N: P: K of 8:5:25, at a rate of one gram per litre fortnightly, all year round. We also use Aminogrow and a product called Harvest to give the plants a variety of goodies to get them growing/flowering well. To get optimum results when using Pine bark mixes, it is a good idea to give your plants a drink of lime-water in early autumn and again in early spring. We use micro-fine lime (F70 Superfine Limestone) at a rate of one gram per litre. We also use and recommend Orchid Care Services treated pine bark. For seedlings, 6 parts fine, two medium, and 1 part 10mm river pebbles. We have found that using an Orchid food with an N: P: K of 12.12.20 gives seedlings that little extra to get up & go. Dendrobiums and Sarcochilus up to 140mm pots, 6 parts medium, two parts fine and one part 10mm river pebbles, speciosum up to 140 – 180mm pots 6 parts medium, two parts coarse and one part 20mm river pebbles. For larger speciosum 6 parts coarse, two parts medium and one of 20mm river pebbles. Before potting (using dry mix) sieve the mix to remove all ‘fines’, put the fines on the garden or into your Cymbidium mix, if you grow them. When deflasking we add a capful of Envy (Stress-guard) to the water, soak the seedlings for 15-20 minutes in this solution, shake all the agar off the roots, in the water, then lay them on some damp newspaper. After potting we sprinkle a mix of sel-grit and canunda shell (50/50) over each pot; this is for a lime and calcium supplement. Now totally drench the plant to get rid of any missed ‘fines’, and thoroughly soak the bark to encourage the roots to grow into a nice new moist environment. This process could take up to 15 minutes, depending on the quantity of plants. Do not let the bark dry out in the early stages of the plants’ potting into its new mix. Morning sun is also very essential ingredient in maintaining a good healthy growing / flowering environment. We suggest that where we have made note of the fact a plant should be given a rest or grown in an intermediate house, that is where we grow them, or how we grow them, it is your final choice. The fertiliser, Amino K Aminogrow sel-grit/canunda shell mix, lime & HOZON™ line feeders, and their repair kits, plus DRAMM™ Watering Wands & the fine rainmaking head as well as the small head to work with the HOZON™ are available from the nursery and we have a range of ancillary products, some brand new to help you make life a little easier. *** PLUS we have our AUSSIE NATIVE STARTER KIT. *** STILL JUST $27.50 THE Ideal gift for THE person who has everything. The kit includes 3 x plants in 50mm tubes, (@ $7.00 each). You may wish to include a more expensive tube, we just add the difference between it & the $7.00 onto the base price, 3 x 80mm pots, fertiliser, enough bark mix to pot the three plants into & all-important INSTRUCTIONS. We hope that this is of some help, & look forward to hearing from you, should we be able to assist further. In closing, congratulations to all those who won prizes with our plants last year, & if you win a show, or an award this year, please don’t forget to enter the plant into the Ira Butler or Bill Murdock competitions, and for the P.N.G. species & hybrids the Hermon G Slade Trophies. You, your efforts, & your plant deserve nothing less. You’re Society Secretary or Show Marshall should have entry forms. Best wishes, Phena & Brian P.S.
