Ceramic Bead Painting Kit GET READY! Place all materials on a f lat protected surface (a newspaper or ALEX® Drop Cloth works well). Fill a cup with water to clean your paintbrush and wooden stick. They should be dried with a paper towel after rinsing so that your colors don’t mix. ! WARNING! The paint is permanent and may stain. Please protect your clothing and work area! GET SET! Step One: Sketch We suggest sketching your ideas for your beads onto a separate piece of paper with a pencil before you begin painting. This way, you can plan your design before it becomes permanent. You can use the package as a guide, or you can make up your own creative designs! Step Two: Paint String a number of beads onto your pipe cleaner, or use cotton swabs to hold your beads so they are easier to paint. Once you have finished your sketches and have all of your paints, water cup and beads on a protected surface, it is time to paint! You have 6 colors to choose from, and you can mix colors to create a new shade. Just make sure to rinse and dry your brush between colors. Use the wooden stick to easily make dots and dashes. If you want to change your design, you can wipe the paint off using a damp tissue. For more intense colors, let the paint dry for a few minutes, then paint on a second coat. Once you have finished your design, let the beads dry overnight. Hint! If you'd like to paint one color on top of a background color, let the bottom color dry for a 15-20 minutes before painting on top of it. Step Three: Bake (optional) ! WARNING! Adult Supervision is required to operate oven! If you would like to make your designs more durable, you can bake the beads after you have let the paint dry for 24 hours. Remove the beads from the pipe cleaner, and put them on a baking sheet. Bake the beads in the oven at 300˚F (150˚C) for 25 minutes. You may notice a slight smell while baking, but this is normal, and will disappear quickly. After 25 minutes, switch off the oven and leave the oven door partly open. Allow the beads to cool for an hour before touching. DO NOT remove the beads immediately, as they will be very hot! Once the beads have cooled, ask a grown-up to take them out of the oven for you. 300˚F (150˚C) 25 minutes GO! Once your beads have completely cooled, you are ready to make bracelets, necklaces and keychains! 1 To tie a cord to a pendant, hold the two ends of the 2 cord together to make a loop in the middle. Put that middle loop through the hole in the ceramic pendant, and then put the string through the loop. Now you can tie a pretty pendant around your neck! 3 To add beads to your key chain, first tie some cord onto a silver ring using the same knot as the pendant. Then weave the two ends through each ceramic bead. Make a knot after the last beads. You can add a couple of glass beads in between the ceramic beads as you are lacing them. You can also tie beads to your key chain by just threading some cord through the bead, then the ring, and back through the bead. To make your bracelets and necklaces, just thread as many ceramic beads onto the cord as you like! You can make a knot between the beads to space them apart, or thread a glass bead between your ceramic beads! #175 ©2004 ALEX: Northvale, NJ 07647 Visit our website at www.alextoys.com
