This will be delivered through a series of thought-provoking exhibitions, lectures, events and online blogs, including the chronicled diaries of men called to the Front in 1914 from Lincolnshire. 1914, A Call to Arms for Lincolnshire On 4th August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. On the whole, the people of Britain supported this war and believed that it would only take a matter of months to defeat Germany and that the men would be home by Christmas. The men of the Lincolnshire Regiment and its Territorials were mobilised immediately. These troops marched through many Lincolnshire towns, cheered on by the crowds as they headed towards their mustering points at Lincoln and Grimsby drill halls. By 14th August the first troops from Lincolnshire were sent out to face the German army in Belgium. These were professional soldiers and were part of the 'British Expeditionary Force'. By December 1914 after such encounters as the first battles of Mons, Marne and Aisne the British Expeditionary Force had been reduced to half its original size with the loss of 50,000 men. In the meantime, on 7th August 1914, Lord Kitchener, made his first appeal for 100,000 volunteers. The now famous poster campaign featuring him pointing directly at the reader created an overwhelming response from patriotic volunteers desperate to get involved. The army was overwhelmed with men flocking to sign up. Whether for the adventure, the wage, or the chance to get out of monotonous agricultural work, Lincolnshire's recruiting stations were filled with eager volunteers. 2014 World War One Centenary Activities Exhibition 1914, A Call to Arms for Lincolnshire Opens Monday 4th August 2014 | Ends Sunday 4th January 2015 This exhibition reflects on 1914, beginning with the outbreak of war and the call to arms.
