Ban of Dogs Entering the School Site:
It is with extreme reluctance that I have decided to ban dogs from the school
site, as someone that has always had dogs and enjoyed what they bring to a
family. The fact is that there have been a number of incidents in recent weeks
that have brought a focus on student safety. I have a responsibility to make our
school as safe as it can be for our students and the behaviour of some dogs
has given a number of staff, parents and students cause for concern.
I realise that for many owners this ban will be an inconvenience and that some
dogs are so small that they could only threaten ankles but it remains the case
that some dogs in some circumstances do become aggressive. That
aggression, regardless of whether it is directed towards another dog or not,
could lead to one of our students being bitten and scarred for life and that is a
risk I can eliminate on the school site. The ban is effective immediately and I
ask dog owners for their understanding, particularly if you forget and need to be
reminded by one of my staff.

ASSEMBLY NEWS
Tuesday 27th August 2013
This week’s assembly was presented by the talented years 5 and 6 guitar group
and clarinet group. Congratulations on your amazing performances.
Atwell Primary School Faction Athletics Carnival
We will be holding our Faction Athletics Carnival for Years 3 – 6 on Friday 6th
September. The Throws and Jumps events will be held on Tuesday 3rd
September. Mr Mort, our Phys Ed teacher, has sent a note home to parents
outlining the program for both days. A reminder that it is a regular school day
for younger children and it is expected they will remain in class. There will be
opportunities when their teachers will take them to the oval to watch events.
Please be aware that the canteen has sent home their special set menu which
will apply for the Friday and recess sales will not be available that day.
Book Parade
Below are photos from our wonderful Book Parade which was held on
Wednesday 21st August. Absolutely fantastic costumes were displayed
by our students and staff as they shared the book they were representing.
Many, many thanks to our terrific parents for their innovation with the
costumes and the support you have given to our staff and students. It was
exciting to see the Parade, what a huge success! Well done everybody!
More photos have been posted on our website for you to view.
Chaplin’s Corner:
Hello! I would like to ask you a question and I would like you to think about it
before you answer! How are you? I am really interested to know how you are
not just your day or the normal “I’m good” but how are you?
Please really think about it – what is going on in your mind at the moment is it
something that you actually have to deal with or is it something that is perceived
to be a problem but we can’t actually do anything about?
If it’s a perceived problem please write it down and put it in a jar on the fridge or
in the cupboard, because you can’t actually do anything about it. You need to
free up a bit of brain space but your brain won’t let you just forget it – so write it
down. It will always be there if you feel the need to pick it up again – when that
need arises take it out of the jar have a look at it and if you still can’t actually do
any thing about it put it back in the jar.
If it’s a problem that needs attention, please also write it down. Look at it and
decide what really needs to be done first. Write that action together with any
other possible solutions you can think of, keep looking at the problem and what
needs to be done next – remembering that at this moment all we are doing is
deciding what needs to be done – we aren’t fixing it yet because we need all the
actions written down in order that we can start to tackle it one step at a time. If
the problem is too big to deal with on your own decide who you can ask to help
you with it - family, family friend, partner or do you just need someone to listen
to you?
Remember I’m here if you need someone who is not involved.
Till next time – smile

Parent Learning Journey 2013
In Week 8 on Wednesday 11th September, our annual “Learning Journey” will
take place for students in Years 1 – 6. You will have an opportunity to visit
your child’s classroom so they can share and celebrate with you what they have
been learning this year. The program is as follows (please take note of the
times as they are different to what is on the term planner):
3.15– 4.15 pm
4.15 – 4.30 pm
4.30 – 5.15 pm
“Learning Journeys” in classrooms
Crown Music performance by our Senior Choir in the
Mort Hall
“Learning Journeys” continue in classrooms
At 4.15 pm all classrooms will be closed to allow parents to join us in Mort Hall
for the music performance. Classrooms will re-open at 4.30 pm.
As teaching staff WILL NOT be on playground duty during the “Learning
Journey” please ensure your children are supervised at all times whilst on
the school grounds, especially around the billabong and play equipment.
We would like everyone to be safe whilst on the school grounds.
Thank you.

VacSwim October school holiday programs
Swimming pools and beaches are part of our Western Australian lifestyle. It is
important for every child to learn to swim properly and develop essential water safety
skills. VacSwim’s October school holiday swimming program is conducted by qualified
instructors who teach children the skills to be confident swimmers and safe in the
water.
For further information and how to enrol, visit www.det.wa.edu.au/swimming.
Parking at School:
With the ever-increasing numbers at the school, parking and student safety is of great
concern. Parents are asked at all times to be mindful of children when parking,
reversing and driving around the school area. We would also like to
remind parents the purpose of “Kiss n Drive” is to keep traffic
flowing. This is not to be used as a car park whilst waiting for
children. Please be considerate to other users of “Kiss n Drive” when
using this facility. Thank you.
From the P & C:
Please make sure all Activate Atwell money has been returned the total raised will be
announced next week.
The P&C are looking for a new Safety House Co-ordinator, this is a vital program that
the P&C run for the safety of all children in our local community. The present coordinator has done an amazing job and everything is in order for someone to simply
take over, it is not am onerous task and has a committee of volunteers ready to work
with somebody new. If you can help please contact Sam Higgins on 0405 146 164 or
[email protected]
A huge thanks to all the ladies who have offered to be class representatives - the only
classes without one are LA9 and LA10 - and who are now busy collecting all parents
email addresses for the school. Hopefully this initiative is one that will continue to grow
in the future.
