March 7, 2014 Dear Family, Congratulations! Your child has the opportunity to apply for admission to 212° Academy, an enrichment program serving select students who will be entering grades 5 and 6 in Warren County Public Schools for the upcoming 2014-2015 school year. Water boils at 212° Fahrenheit. Matter changes form. Water becomes steam. 212° Academy is a place for high-ability students to be transformed as they immerse themselves into an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum. In August of the 2013-2014 school year, fifth and sixth-grade students from across the entire district began participating in a weekly enrichment program at the Warren County AcademicAquatic Center, located at 303 Lovers Lane. One day per week, students travel by bus from their home school to 212° Academy, where they spend the day learning alongside like-minded peers. Students at 212° Academy are actively involved in hands-on/minds-on, project-based learning as they investigate, create, experiment and build. Mornings may include participation in physics challenges, puzzling over mathematical riddles and logic puzzles, learning computer programming or conducting science experiments of their own design. In the afternoons, students take part in long-term Special Interest Labs (SILS). Special Interest Labs have included topics such as Machine Dissection, Crime Scene Investigation, Mad Labs Chemistry, Roller Coaster Physics, CAD drawing and 3D Printing, Online Book Publishing, Flight Class and more! Selection is based on current STAR and KPREP data, norm-referenced assessments and parent and teacher input. Student writing samples are also required. If you would like your child to be considered for this unique opportunity, please complete the enclosed application and “Permission to Test” form and return it to your child’s school by Thursday, March 20, 2014. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s Gifted and Talented resource teacher, one of our current 212° teachers, Jennifer Sheffield at [email protected].
