Message from the Warden:
Dear Students,
I would like to reach out my heart and offer you a warm welcome to Red Hall.
For many of you, this might be the first time you live away from home (and your country). I
hope that you can enjoy living in this “home away from home”. Hall life is fascinating and
exciting, if and only if you can have a sense of belonging when both your personal and group
interests are respected. As a relational community, the hall also serves as an extension of
learning – learning to relate with oneself while everyday life is expose to interactions and
influences from room-mates and hall-mates; learning to respect individual differences while at
the same time learning to become an independent individual in an integral whole. I believe that
every person and every community has skills and knowledge, strengths and assets that when
mobilized, can contribute to the creation of a healthy community living. This extension of
learning should go beyond the hall and the university to the various communities of our society
as well.
Red Hall is a passionate caring community that places a high priority in the spirit of contributing
to the community (both the hall community and the community in a broader sense – the
various communities in our society) with our hearts. A will of dedication to giving, the most
outstanding spirit of our hall, stems from a philosophy of mutual respect and mutual
contribution. As the privileged group of university students, we have to reach out to the various
communities with our hearts, to concern others, to commit and to contribute ourselves for the
good of the society.
I believe that everyone in the community has something to offer. One of the most important
things that I believe we can offer is an invitation to respectful partnership. As the hall warden, I

would like to walk hand-in-hand with you in shaping the unique identity and character of our
hall that make visible new possibilities.
“Do not keep back good from those who have a right to it, when it is in the power of your hand
to do it.” (Proverb 3:27)

First of all, I would like to welcome you all to yellow hall on behalf of Homantin hall. Let me first
introduce myself. I am Jinsoo Lee, yellow hall warden, from the school of hotel & tourism
management. I understand that it would be first time for many of you to stay away from home.
You may have a mixed feeling of excitement and anxiety. Some of you get used to PolyU life
well and some may struggle to enjoy the campus life.
Yellow hall residents, when you have
problems with your emotion, study, family, relationship with friends, and whatever problems
you have, please do not keep it to yourself until it becomes serious problems. We have
wonderful yellow hall team members (tutors, warden, hall management staff) who are willing to
help you resolve your issues.
My students and colleagues believe that I am a funny guy and enjoy joking around. I would
really like you to see me as approachable person. We have around 260 students in yellow hall,
so I may not recognize you when we run into each other in the hall or campus. When you
happen to see me, please wave at me. I am very happy to mingle and interact with you. Yellow
hall residents, I believe you made the right choice to join yellow hall. I wish you all the best for
your new semester. Thanks.

Message from the Warden:
Welcome to Green Hall!
Green is not just the dominant colour of the natural environment. It can also be a state of mind
and a way of life. Our reliance on the environment for the very air we breathe, the water we
drink, and the food we eat makes it imperative that we do our part to protect it, and that is why
we have chosen “Environmental Sustainability” as the theme of Green Hall.
At Green Hall, you are one of many like-minded individuals with a concern for the environment.
Your beliefs and practices form the basis of a culture of sustainability for Green Hall. Activities
such as Earth Hours, recycling/upcycling of materials, as well as collection and distribution of
used items (e.g. books) are organized to practice carbon-reduction on a collective level. Other
activities such as Geopark tours and hiking trips will connect us to nature and facilitate the
development of a warm and caring community. Various social gatherings are also organized to
enhance your exposure to different cultures and experiences. Finally, you will have the chance
to interact with residents of other halls through crossover activities.
In addition, Green Hall provides a learning environment to effectively complement your
classroom experience. You can look forward to stimulating activities to support your
intellectual growth.
This may be the first time for you to live away from home. While this new chapter of your life
can be challenging, I am confident that you will enjoy the experience and will remember hall
life with fond memories in the years to the come.

Message from the Warden:
Hall life offers the “soft skills” education which an all-round education cannot be completed
without. Very often, in modern day society, it is the “soft skills” that make one shines above the
others. At University, there is no better platform than gaining excellent hall education in
developing and improving ones’ social interaction, effective and ethical leadership skills. To
become an effective communicator with good critical thinking and problem solving skills, I
believe hall education is essential and conducive to learning at University.
“Blue” conveys a sense of calmness and peace. This Hall believes in promoting a well
balanced education to all our residents. Not only excellent academic achievement are aspired
in our hall family, we strongly believe in whole body development during the time in University physical well-being, psychological resilience, and social harmony & maturity.

A state of calmness to face any adversity in life is important in ensuring future success in
adulthood in the society after graduation. Our students have every opportunity to become a
leader in the future, and as for leaders, good psychological resilience is one of the most
important personal attributes.

Social Harmony & Maturity
An ability to develop and maintain harmonious social relations with people from different
backgrounds and cultures can be nurtured and matured through engaging in various hall

Welcome to the Violet Hall – the hall that has a special theme of cultural diversity and
integration!
The Homantin Halls are named with six rainbow colours. The violet colour of our Hall implies
imagination, sensitivity and consideration.
Hall life is part and parcel of your university education, complementary to the formal curriculum
in classrooms. It facilitates your all-round developments through a variety of exciting activities,
on top of your discipline-specific knowledge and generic skills.
As a resident of this hall, you will have the golden opportunities to appreciate and value
cultural diversities; to build friendship with other hall residents from near and afar; to respect
and care for other residents; and to develop leadership abilities to work with people of different
cultural and professional backgrounds. All of these are essential elements for success in your
career development.
I wish all of you a vibrant and enjoyable hall experience as colourful as the rainbow, and make
it a valuable component of your university life! Supported by a group of excellent tutors, I look
forward to working with you to make the Violet Hall a home away from home for all of our
residents.

Residential Life Manager (Hall Education)
Mr. Ivan Chung
Student Resources and Residential Life (SRRL)
Office: East Wing G/F of Hung Hom Halls
Tel: 3159 0007
Email: [email protected]
Message from the Manager
It is an honour to serve as Residential Life Manager overseeing residential student education
My family and I recently moved to Hong Kong after living in Los Angeles for the past 10 years.
Prior to meeting my wife, I grew up in the Chicago area, and worked in Milwaukee, Houston,
Chicago, and New York City.
One of the main reasons for our move to Hong Kong is that I
strongly believe in the formative time of learning as a university student.
Having experienced
university hall life for several years, I can say that those years were undoubtedly some of the
most influential in shaping my understanding of life.
The rich opportunities in out-of-classroom learning at PolyU can also help shape you into a
truly holistic person.
Sports activities, community meals, volunteer services, holiday
celebrations, art and music and cooking workshops, parties and carnivals, global and cultural
engagements, environmental services, leadership and interpersonal experiences, faith-based
activities, and excursions – to name a few, are part of the many opportunities for
cross-disciplinary, intercultural, and experiential learning that can help develop eager students
like yourself.
Beyond mere accommodation, students in the residences become and develop
holistic communities that continue to contribute inwardly and outwardly, and build essential
skills that are critical for their future.
My own varied experiences: studying classical (European) music performance and education
as an undergraduate, living in multiple socio-economic stratas, cultures, and cities throughout
my vocational years, working as a personal trainer (weight room and physical fitness), sports
coach, speaker, spiritual developer, intercultural instructor and practitioner, educator and
community developer in post-genocide communities in east Africa, educational consultant in
urban Brasil, and now a residential student educator in Hong Kong – have all compelled me to
make sense of and integrate my own life, and I invite each of you together to do the same in
this journey, as we create the best learning experience you can have.

Roommate Agreement
Room-sharing
Why Room-sharing?


Room-sharing forms a good platform to develop your interpersonal skills.
It is one of your most rewarding university experiences and is beneficial to your
future success.
 It is a new subject you may have never learnt before. People of different cultures
and backgrounds will make the living together interesting and challenging.
 Hence do be prepared as there will always be some initial adjustments required.
How to benefit from Room-sharing?
There are hundreds of ways to do it but the key ingredients for success are:
S for Self-respect
A for Acceptance of diversity
O for Open communication
When and What to do?
Self-introduction Upon Moving-in

Introduce yourself and get to know each other, look for common grounds and set
the scene for a harmonious relationship
How to Make the Self-introduction Effective?






When you move in, take the initiative to introduce yourself to your
room/suitemates face to face.
As this is a time to get to know each other, be open and do not pass judgment.
Set the scene for a harmonious relationship and positive body languages are
important, e.g. stand up to greet your new room/suite-mate, smile, steady eye
contact, a firm handshake.
Share your “private” data, like your name, nickname, course of study, year of study,
where you are from, your hobbies and interests etc.
If your room/suite mates are NOT around, leave a note on the desk or on the door.
If you are the first one to move in the suite or room, do not scatter your belongings
all over the place to claim your territory. Keep your things within the designated
space.
P.43
Roommate Agreement
Rules of thumb:
 It is better to create the Agreement right from the start or at least within the 1st
week.
 Find a mutually convenient time to sit down and go through the Agreement
openly.
 Do not assume your habits or your lifestyle is the best or the only option. Accept
the differences of your suite/roommates and look for an agreeable point
somewhere in between that you may both be comfortable with.
 Remember that mutual respect is the key to build and nurture a relationship. You
will gain more if there is a fair share of give and take.
 Be genuine, positive and flexible to look for the largest space possible for all the
stakeholders.
 Talk about your lifestyles and expectations; come up with some agreed practices in
the way you share your time, space, cost, and resources of the room and suite.
 For personal belongings, don’t assume your roommate is willing to share.
 When everyone has moved in, agree on how the common spaces are to be shared
e.g. shelves in the refrigerator, racks in the bathroom.
Teething Problems
 If you feel uncomfortable with some behaviors of your roommate, before it
becomes a big problem, you need to communicate it openly with your room/suite
mates.
 Handle and address problems and concerns in a mature manner.
 You may get together to go through the Checklist every now and then for “health
check” purposes.
Real issues of concern
 Do not compromise on issues such as your mate’s possession of illicit drugs as it is
a criminal offence.
 Look for help from your tutors, warden or staff in Hall Administration for issues of
grave concern.
P.44
