No. 521 : 18 November 2011 Autumn Term 2011 Fall down 7 times, but get up 8 times! FORWARD DATES One of the most important life-skills we can teach our children is the ability to be flexible and adaptive. The world is not fixed, their lives are subject to change and their ability to move with the change and adapt is a crucial skill. Secondary school heads report the Highfield spirit as one where the girls can initiate activities, put them into action and see them through to the end. This has been demonstrated many times this week as we have been juggling the various pupil-initiated competitions to raise money for charity. Having the ability to manage the activity and to change when required is often demonstrated here. The extension to this is, how do we react when things are not going so well? My prop was two sticks, one that bent under pressure and one that snapped under pressure. Being able to cope with difficulties, persevere and pick yourself up after a set-back is so important. Fall down 7 times but get up 8 times! As parents we have to model these skills so that our young people develop resilience, not just at school but at home as well. Annie Lee ___________________________________________________ I am delighted to see that we have been ranked 46 in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep Schools in the country. This is a great accolade for the teaching staff here and for the hard work that your daughters are prepared to put in. We have continued to raise our game over the last few years and our Rankings for Highfield in the Past 4 Years position is now firmly established in the top 50. 2008 119 We have much to 2009 92 celebrate here. I have 2010 82 attached the full list to this newsletter. 2011 46 Page 2 HIGHFIELD NEWS Empty Your Money Boxes! On Monday we are holding a fund-raising activity in our houses. The girls have been asked to bring in silver and gold coins to fill Highfield bird shapes that will be on the floor. The money raised will go to our international charity, the Manuelito Children’s Home in Honduras. The children in EYFS are doing this at 8.35am so that parents can stay and help them. MATHS NEWS This morning at assembly we presented the first maths certificates of this academic year to Lottie Heuser and Tegan Harris. Well done to them. New puzzles are now on display. Please encourage your daughter to have a go and remember to submit any solutions to the year 5 classroom by Thursday next week. Primary Maths Challenge It is the time of year for the Primary Maths Challenge once again. This is a national competition aimed at the top 60% of pupils in Year 5 and 6. The challenge comes in the form of a paper with 25 multiple-choice worded problems. Results are submitted to the Mathematics Association with the highest scoring pupils in the country being invited to take part in the PMC Finals early next year. Last year over 84 000 pupils took part throughout the country with 1000 going through to the finals, one of whom was Anna Barclay from Highfield. This challenge is a great opportunity for our able mathematicians to pit their wits against not only their classmates, but also fellow students across the nation! I have already spoken to those girls who I would like to take part in the event and they will have the opportunity to practise some past papers in school. However, I would encourage anyone with an interest in what the challenge involves to take a look online at m-a.org.uk. There are plenty of examples of past papers. Carol Hewson Spread a little happiness… That’s just what Highfield Choir did on Thursday afternoon when they sang to people at the Salvation Army. The sharing of our music with the community was much appreciated! SPORTS NEWS On Wednesday, the U11s A & B netball squad played against Hallgrove School away. Both teams were on form and their superior passing and defensive play resulted in a 13-4 win for the As and a 12-2 win for the Bs. Girl of the match was Sophie Dargan and Amelia Brown. Well done. Highfield PA Congratulations! Sophie Cooper played her cornet in the Grade 1 and 2 Brass Class at Marlow Festival – and gained distinction, first place and a gold medal! Support a local business and raise money for the school. Buy your Christmas Turkey from Copas (www.Copas.co.uk) and put HPS11 in the order code box and Copas will donate £5 to the school. Also don't forget to get your Christmas Fayre tickets and return your plastic pot. Thanks. Sioned Jones Well Done! Well done to Year 6 who raised £43.89 at their cake sale this week.
