Friday 9th December 2016 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year 2016-2017 HEAD’S MESSAGE FORTHCOMING PREP SCHOOL EVENTS As expected, the Reception Nativity performances were an absolute joy! Tissues were required for tears of awe and wonder and tears of laughter in equal measure with my favourite moment being a shepherd with a spinning headdress! Many thanks to all of the staff involved who helped our children to give such a wonderful gift to their friends and families. The same vote of thanks can be said to our Nursery children who performed with such confidence to their families at their Christmas sing -a-long. For many children this is their first opportunity to begin to develop their self-confidence in this way. A super achievement. DECEMBER Trips to the theatre this week have been hugely successful and in a non-seasonal activity, our Year 6 children have experienced a visiting planetarium in their science lesson… unless they were trying to follow the star?!? JANUARY Next week is looking like an extremely festive treat! Parents are very welcome to join us at the Cathedral on Monday afternoon for our annual Carol Service. Children will be enjoying Christmas parties on Thursday afternoon and on Friday children are welcome to come to school in their Christmas jumpers as part of a nonuniform morning. The next PA uniform sale will be held on Saturday 18th march. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused. SWALLOWS COFFEE MORNING The coffee morning at Swallows was a big success! NURSERY NEWS The week had an amazing start for the Nursery children when a parent kindly brought in a huge ‘light up Percy’ which he had spent a long time making with his son. This was made for the Leamington Lantern Parade and the Nursery children thought it was wonderful. We would like to thank this parent very much for thinking of us and showing us your wonderful creation. Christmas The children have been getting excited enjoying a range of Christmas activities in the run up to the festive season. This has included a variety of arts and crafts, including designing and making special cards involving lots of glitter and sparkles. The children have helped to create Santa’s Workshop where they have had great fun independently wrapping boxes and presents to play with, whilst looking at the various different shapes and sizes. The workshop has been a big hit with the children and they have had so much fun dressing up in a range of outfits such as Santa, his elves and even stars! Santa letters have been written and posted in the post-box with children drawing pictures and writing their special messages to Santa! The sensory tray in Santa’s Workshop has also proved a success with the children as they have been busy exploring colours, textures and sounds by playing with tinsel, glitter, bells, baubles and shiny bows! We would like to say a huge well done to all our children for their beautiful singing during the Nursery Sing Along. They looked spectacular wearing their Christmas hats and have all worked so hard learning the words to a variety of songs. Well Done! Read, Write, Inc. The children have been looking at ‘g’ and ‘o’ this week. Once again we have had some wonderful items brought in from home and the children have enjoyed discussing and sorting these items into the correct sound boxes. As this term nears to an end we shall not be looking at any particular letters next week but revisiting what we have learnt so far. Our new letter sounds will continue in January. Please can we ask that any toys and items brought in from home are for our weekly letter sounds only. Special toys and teddies which are brought in by the children can very often get lost or broken, which can result in the children becoming upset. Thank you for your support in this. Our final week of term is due to be very busy once again. The Nursery Christmas Party will take place during the afternoon of Thursday 15th December. If any morning children would like to stay on and join us for this, please let Nursery staff know as soon as possible. The party should end by 3:00pm. RECEPTION NEWS The Grumpy Sheep I would like to say a huge ‘WELL DONE’ to our Reception superstars. Our Nativity was incredibly successful and I’m so proud and each of every little star. To the Reception teachers, teaching assistants and Miss Bawcutt; you inspired and led the children in so many ways. Thank you for the brilliant work done, I’m already looking forward to the next production! Mrs Brand. Theatre Trip To celebrate the end of our Nativity and the beginning of our Christmas celebrations, Reception went to see ‘Stick Man’ this morning. Thank you to Reception for their excellent behaviour and showing off our school proudly to Warwick Arts Centre. We all had a fantastic time and can highly recommend the superb show for a family visit…. ‘Stick Man, Oh Stick Man, beware of the dog, the girl, the swan and the sea!’ Sports Kits Please ensure that your child has appropriate sports kit to wrap them up warm this winter. They are often outside and their little legs get chilly. Please also remember to name every item; 16 pairs of shorts, tshirts and socks can get mixed up easily. Thank you. Named Uniform On a similar note, please ensure that hats and gloves are named. All children should have them at this time of year as we like to go out whenever possible. Some top tips… when your child takes off their coat, encourage them to put their hat down the sleeve of their coat- this way it can’t fall on the floor with the other 50! Gloves can be clipped to coat sleeves or threaded through the arms with wool. It keeps them handy when they are needed at a cold play time. Thank you. Missing Shoe We have been missing a boys shoe since Monday’s Games lesson. Please check all bags in case a small shoe is hiding! It belongs to a child in Mrs Brand’s class. Thank you! ‘Good as Gold’ book Each week the children in Reception have been introduced to a key part of our rewards system. The ‘Star Charts’ came out first, along with the gold stars! When the time was right, our ‘Home Bears’ joined us in our classrooms. Coming next term shall be our ‘Good as Gold’ book. This is a magical book looked after by Mrs Brand. Each week, Mrs Parkes will share names from the book in her Early Years assembly. If your name appears in the ‘Good as Gold’ book because you are a star of the week, you shall get three stars on your star chart! YEAR 4 GREEK DAY YEAR 6 NEWS Year 4 had a fantastic time on Friday when we all came together to celebrate our 'Greek day'! The children (and grown ups!) looked amazing in their costumes, so a big well done and a thank you to you all for putting in so much effort. We spent the day immersing ourselves in the world of the Ancient Greeks; we sampled some delicious Greek food, acted out scenes from the famous legend of 'Theseus and the Minotaur', and we even painted our own Greek vases. A great time was had by all. Children- the funny faces you pulled when you were trying the olives have kept your teachers laughing all weekend! It has been an extremely busy week in Year 6 this week! Last Friday, pupils and staff in Year 6 visited both new and old Coventry Cathedrals and Holy Trinity Church and on Tuesday, children were treated to a professional performance of Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' at the Rep Theatre in Birmingham. During their visit to the Cathedral, pupils took part in a range of guided tours with a focus on the Christian signs and symbolisms that they have been studying this term in RE. It was also a superb introduction to our fascinating World War II History topic which we will commence in the Lent Term. During a rather chilly hour in the Old Cathedral, children learnt first-hand about the night of the Coventry Blitz in 1940, along with the city's legacy as a city of reconciliation. Pupils were also treated to the rare opportunity to some real peace and quiet as they wandered the New Cathedral completing sketches as a stimulus for stained glass windows which will be completed during Art lessons next term. Tuesday's visit to Rep Theatre was the first of its kind. Traditionally, this has been a trip conducted for Year 7 pupils by the Senior School, but this year, Year 6 from the Prep were invited along what a wonderful opportunity for the children to meet Senior School English staff ahead of their transition in September! An entertaining afternoon was had by all and the interval ice lollies were certainly a hit! A lovely way to unwind after a long term of hard work! NETBALL FIXTURE RESULTS U11 Netball v Fairfield Prep – Wednesday 7th December 2106 On Wednesday we had a lovely afternoon at Fairfield Prep. We were able to take all the Year 6 girls to play netball matches and the girls played with great team spirit and commitment. We came away with more great results too. ‘School Games’ – Primary Schools’ Biathlon Competition This year we have registered to be involved with something called ‘School Games’ which has been set up to provide opportunities for young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. It is delivered on four separate competition levels. On Wednesday we competed in our first Level 2 competition and our first Biathlon competition (25m swim & 400m run). This was a very new experience for KHPS but we performed very well in our heats. We do not have the final results just yet but these will be added to Sagitta as soon as we hear how we did. Well done to the eight children who competed! Super team effort. ‘A’ team WON 9 – 8 ‘B’ team WON 4 – 3 ‘C’ team WON 5 – 0 RUGBY FIXTURE RESULTS ‘D’ team LOST 1 – 3 U11Netball v Bromsgrove School – Saturday 3rd December 2016 A super morning was had at Bromsgrove with the Year 6 A & B netball teams. The culmination of these lessons was House Hockey matches on Tuesday. All the girls took part in these games and played with great effort and teamwork.
