Bumblebee’s Scarf A child’s size scarf will be about 5 inches wide and 36 inches long. The adult scarf is a little wider and can be as long as you like. (most likely about twice that long!) Materials: Worsted weight yarn in a washable wool blend works best. You will need one skein of black (100 grams) and one skein of gold (100 grams) for the child’s size scarf. Needles: American size 7 or 8. (smaller needles will make a tighter knit, more like the scarf pictured, bigger needles make a stretchier scarf) Gauge: 5 stitches per inch (not critical for this pattern) Illustrations by Jeffrey Lee The Train To Christmas Town by Peggy Ellis Illustrated by Jeffrey Lee For Garter stitch scarf: Cast on loosely 26 stitches (36 for the adult size) in main color (gold). Knit 28 rows and change color at the beginning of the next row. If you look closely, you should be able to count 14 ridges when you’ve knit 28 rows. Knit 28 rows of black, then change to gold again. Repeat these 2 blocks of gold and black until the scarf is as long as you like. End with 28 rows of gold and bind off loosely. Stockinette Version: If you prefer, the alternate rows can be purled instead of knitted, for a firmer scarf with a right and wrong side. (knit one row, purl the next) To make an edge that won’t curl, knit the first and last two stitches on every purl row. Ribbed alternative: Cast on 30 stitches. Row 1: *Knit 2, purl 2, and repeat from* across. Row 2: *Purl 2, knit 2, and repeat across. Repeat these two rows 14 times, ending with a row 2. Change colors and continue. Bind off in the ribbing pattern. Pattern by Peggy Bullard Ellis, 2015
