REQUIREMENTS FOR
OVERSIZE LOADS IN
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Escort vehicles are essential in preserving road
safety when large over dimensional loads are
moved on the road.
Pilot vehicle escorts with appropriate signage
provide advance warning to approaching traffic. For
larger over dimensional loads police escorts are
required for the safe movement of other traffic.
The escort charts published by the Department
have recently been updated to reflect a minor
revision to the application of police escorts and will
apply from 23 January 2012.
The pilot and police escort requirements described
in this document are the minimum level. There
may be situations or factors such as traffic
volumes, topography, or accident history, where
additional pilot and/or police escorts may be
required to ensure a level of safety of other road
users. This is assessed on an individual basis by a
Departmental Vehicle Permits Officer and at times
in consultation with SA Police.
South Australia is divided into three areas for the
purpose of determining escort requirements:

Adelaide Area

Adelaide Hills Area

SA Country Area
The escort changes only affect the Adelaide
Area and the SA Country Area. There are no
changes to the Adelaide Hills Area.
