Student Brochure - University of Missouri

What is MU AISH?
Welcome!
The vision of MU African Interdisciplinary Studies Hub (MU AISH) is to foster and
strengthen research, teaching, innovation, economic development and outreach programs in
and about Africa at the University of Missouri.
Africa is playing an increasingly prominent role
in all aspects of world affairs. By the end of
this century, Africans will make up the largest
population on Earth. Additionally, Africa boasts
some of the world’s fastest growing economies.
The mission of MU AISH is to serve as an interdisciplinary hub enriching the University of Missouri and surrounding communities. Through
collaborative efforts, the Hub will provide access to knowledge about Africa’s rich legacies
and encourage cross-cultural perspectives.
African artists and scientists, and the art
and science produced by others as a result of
Africa’s unique history and environment, have
had a tremendous impact on the world's cultural
environment. Where would jazz, blues, and rock
n’ roll be had Africans not mastered string and
drum instruments? What would have become
of Picasso’s cubism and all the works that he
inspired without the influence of traditional
African masks and sculpture?
MU AISH provides the campus community with
the following:
Programing Along with support offices
at Mizzou, the Hub will host conferences,
symposiums, lectures, exhibits, film series
and cultural performances throughout the
year.
Academics Students can study the African
diaspora and earn credit through planned
course of study, study abroad, research
internships and more.
Research The Hub connects diverse
disciplines at Mizzou to encourage interdisciplinary efforts and collaboration.
Study Abroad Through the International
Center, colleges and schools, the Hub will
serve as clearinghouse to connect students
to opportunities in Africa, providing unique
opportunities for cultural and language
immersion, service learning or internships.
MU AISH cultivates a space where scholars and
students can deconstruct stereotypes about the
African continent, explore vast terrain, examine
diverse cultures and traditions, illuminate critical issues, and shape new frontiers of knowledge
that encourage and promote understanding and
the study of Africa.
As you embark on your journey as a student
at Mizzou, a prominent land-grant university
known for collaborative and interdisciplinary
research, we urge you to take advantage of the
many opportunities available to you to learn
about the African continent. You can take
courses, join a club, conduct research or study
abroad.

Research Undergraduate Research Teams (URTs)
bring faculty, staff and students from across campus
together to work on interdisciplinary problem-based
research projects linked to one of the four Mizzou
Advantage areas: Food for the Future, Media of the
Future, One Health/One Medicine, and Sustainable
Energy. The program hopes to inspire out-of-thebox collaborations among typically unrelated fields
of study in order to explain phenomena, imagine
solutions, and raise questions in ways not possible
through the lens of any single discipline.
Travel Student Travel Awards provide travel funds
for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students to present their MU-funded research at professional meetings related to the four Mizzou Advantage areas.
