Global Partners: Running Waters Collection Boxes Thank you for choosing Global Partners: Running Waters (GPRW) for your Lenten focus! In order to continue our commitment of responsible stewardship with donor funds and of the Earth, GPRW refrains from purchasing expensive donation collection boxes. Rather, we offer parishes and groups easy instructions for creating these items themselves using recycled materials. We hope this activity will be a fun and meaningful part of formation for your faith community. PLAN AHEAD: A few weeks prior to beginning this project: 1. Make an example of the collection box to share with your classes. 2. Plan to send home one of the attached notes to families, asking them to collect one or more of these simple boxes: A 26 oz. cylinder salt box- such as Morton's, Roundy’s, or other brand Younger children may need assistance with cutting. Alternatively, the teacher or assistant may want to cut the necessary items beforehand to save time. Needed Supplies: salt boxes, labels removed. pre-printed sheets (supplied) scissors glue sticks Additional Supplies if using the plain template for students to decorate themselves: markers water-themed stickers, sequins, or other embellishments Instructions: 1. Carefully pull the metal spout off the top of the salt box and discard. (Can be done ahead.) *Adults should do this part. 2. Decide if your group will use the decorative label, or the plain template label for the children to decorate themselves. 3. Gather scissors, glue sticks, the salt boxes, and the decorative labels. If the children will be decorating the plain labels instead, gather the additional supplies, noted above. 4. Show a sample collection box to the group. 5. Distribute the supplies and pre-printed sheets that fit the boxes. 6. If the children are decorating the labels, instruct them to design and color them with markers first. 7. Instruct the children (or families) to cut out the circle logo to cover the top of the box. Note that they need to cut out the black rectangle for the coin slot. Also, they should cut on the black line so that the rectangle label is the appropriate size. (Noted on the template.) 8. Glue sticks are an effective way to attach the labels. First, run the glue stick along one of the short sides, on the back. Place the sticky side along the side of the round box, making sure it is centered and not overlapping the either end of the box. Press down smoothly. Carefully run the glue stick along the other short end of the back side of the label. Roll the box gently so that the label is flush against the round sides of the box, overlapping the first glued down edge slightly. Press down smoothly. For best results, do not glue the entire back of the label. Next, place glue on the back edges of the circle logo label and press firmly onto the top of the round box, lining the rectangle that is cut out with the coin slot hole. 9. If using the plain template for students to decorate themselves, distribute additional supplies to embellishment the boxes. (This step is optional and should be done after the labels are attached to the salt boxes.)
